The answer is Mount Rushmore, the carved memorial in South Dakota’s Black Hills. Its four “members” are the granite portraits of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. All four men are deceased, and Lincoln, the only one of the four who was assassinated, is the clue that the riddle is built around.
Why the riddle works
The riddle is wordplay. “Rock group” does not refer to a band. It refers to a sculpture cut into a rock face, and the “members” are the four faces that make up the monument. Once you read it that way, each line of the clue fits: the four members are presidents, they are all dead, and one of them was killed by an assassin. The riddle’s own answer page, The Fact Base, gives Mount Rushmore as the answer, and the National Park Service confirms the four figures on its Mount Rushmore history and culture pages.

The four figures and why they were chosen
The National Park Service’s “Why These Four Presidents?” page explains that sculptor Gutzon Borglum selected these men because, in his view, each represented a major stage in the history of the United States. The dates and descriptions below come from that page.
| Figure | Lifespan | Role in Borglum’s choice (per the Park Service) | Cause of death |
|---|---|---|---|
| George Washington | 1732–1799 | Birth of the United States | Not stated on the Park Service page |
| Thomas Jefferson | 1743–1826 | Growth of the United States | Not stated on the Park Service page |
| Theodore Roosevelt | 1858–1919 | Development of the United States | Not stated on the Park Service page |
| Abraham Lincoln | 1809–1865 | Preservation of the United States | Assassinated in 1865 |
The cause-of-death column reflects the riddle’s clue. The Park Service page covers the sculptor’s reasoning and does not address how each man died, so the assassination detail is drawn from standard historical record rather than from that page.

Borglum’s stated purpose
Borglum summarized the monument’s purpose in a statement that the National Park Service reproduces on its history pages: “The purpose of the memorial is to communicate the founding, expansion, preservation, and unification of the United States with colossal statues of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt.” The Park Service page does not give a date for the statement, so it should be cited as Borglum’s undated description of the memorial.
Why the Ramones come to mind, and why they are not the answer
Many readers first think of a real rock band. The Ramones are the usual guess, since all four original members have died. However, nothing in the riddle’s clue points to them, and no assassination is associated with any of the band’s members in the sources reviewed for this answer. The AllMusic biography of the Ramones describes the band’s history but does not support the assassination clue. The phrase “one was assassinated” is the detail that rules out the band and points to the presidents on the mountain.

How to check the answer yourself
- Confirm that the riddle’s answer page names Mount Rushmore. The Fact Base page is linked above.
- Open the National Park Service’s “Why These Four Presidents?” page to see the four figures and Borglum’s reasons for choosing them.
- Match the clue to the faces: four men, all dead, with Lincoln as the one who was assassinated.
If the riddle appears with a different wording, such as “a band” or “a group of four,” the same logic applies: look for four figures carved or painted into stone rather than four musicians.
