Robert Irwin said he could picture his late father, Steve Irwin, reacting to his new Bonds underwear campaign with “a few crikey’s thrown around!” The Australian wildlife conservationist described the “Made for Down Under” ads as a departure from his usual khaki-clad public image—and said the campaign was also meant to celebrate Australia and his conservation work.
What Robert Irwin imagined Steve would say
“I thought a lot about what dad would say about this, actually,” Irwin, 21 at the time of the interview, told PEOPLE. “There’d be a few crikey’s thrown around!” The remark acknowledged the contrast between appearing in underwear and the familiar image of Irwin in khaki, while bringing his father’s famously exuberant catchphrase to mind.
Why the Bonds campaign felt different
The campaign, titled “Made for Down Under,” featured Irwin in underwear alongside snakes and spiders. He said the look was new for him, even though the brand itself was not: “This is something new,” he said with a laugh. “I mean, I wear Bonds, I genuinely love ’em, but I wear my Bonds and then there’s usually a layer of khaki over the top.”
Irwin said Bonds wanted the campaign to celebrate Australia as well as his wildlife-conservation work. That framing connects the ad to his public identity without making the underwear itself the subject of his conservation efforts.

How Steve Irwin’s legacy fits into the story
Robert spoke about his father as a continuing influence on his work. “My dad is and always will be my hero. He’s my absolute hero,” he said. “My inspiration through everything I do. He’s really the guiding light in my life. And when I’m at home and working on wildlife conservation projects, I feel close to him and to his legacy.”
He also described Steve’s public enthusiasm as part of a deeper commitment to improving the world. “He really did inspire, I think, an entire generation. He was a universal voice that was so passionate and obviously so enthusiastic [about wildlife], but behind all of that was a genuine drive to make the world a better place,” Robert said. “And I think he exemplified what it is to truly live.” The bracketed words are an editorial clarification in the interview text.

Robert said his father brought the same intensity to very different responsibilities: “He truly [thought you] should give 100% at every single thing you do, whether it is rescuing a crocodile from East Timor in the middle of a coup, to just being a dad. He was equally passionate about everything he did. And that’s something I want to try and do in my life,” he said. The bracketed phrase is editorial clarification in the published text.

Yahoo Entertainment’s April 4, 2025 report said Bonds was launching in the United States and that the brand was available exclusively there through Amazon and the Bonds Australia website. That is the availability reported at the time, not confirmation of current stock, a particular product listing, or a current price.
