What Ridley Scott Actually Said About Blade Runner 2049—and a New Alien Film

Ridley Scott’s 2017 comments on Blade Runner 2049 were positive, not scathing. A newer Alien film’s reported praise comes secondhand through director Fede Álvarez.

Ridley Scott’s documented public comments about Blade Runner 2049 were positive, not scathing: in 2017 he called it “good,” then “very good,” and later said it “looks incredible.” A 2023 report also attributed praise for a newer Alien film to Scott, based on director Fede Álvarez’s account. The available reporting does not establish which film the headline means or verify that praise directly with Scott, so the two claims need different levels of confidence.

What did Ridley Scott say about Blade Runner 2049?

In a May 2017 interview with The Guardian, Scott was asked about Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming sequel. His answer was: “It’s good,” followed by “very good.” In an October 2017 interview with Den of Geek, he said he had watched half an hour and that it “looks incredible.”

Those comments do not support describing Scott’s reaction to Blade Runner 2049 as scathing. They were made before the film’s release, and the Den of Geek account specifies that he had seen only part of it; they are not a full review.

Where does the “scathing” description come from?

In The Guardian interview, Scott recalled a harsh response to the original Blade Runner (1982): critic Pauline Kael’s review. Scott said the experience distressed him and that he stopped reading press about his films. His remark, “You have to be your own critic,” appears in that discussion. It is Scott describing criticism he received, not criticizing Blade Runner 2049.

What is reported about Scott’s reaction to the newer Alien film?

A Yahoo Entertainment report published in October 2023 attributed the account to director Fede Álvarez, saying Scott called Álvarez’s Alien film “f—ing great.” The same report said Álvarez described Scott as tough on Blade Runner 2049. Yahoo’s page was not accessible for direct verification, and the underlying interview was not checked, so this should be treated as secondhand reporting rather than a quote independently confirmed from Scott.

The headline does not identify the “new” Alien film. The report’s reference is to Álvarez’s film, but it is not enough on its own to settle every possible interpretation of the headline or to establish the precise context of Scott’s alleged praise.

Which Alien film might the headline mean?

Scott has directed films in the franchise, while other directors have made later entries. The British Film Institute’s 2017 interview describes Alien: Covenant as a sequel to Prometheus and identifies Scott as its director; it also notes that he produced Blade Runner 2049. That context does not identify the title’s intended film. The safest reading of the 2023 praise report is that it concerns Álvarez’s film, as Yahoo reported Álvarez’s account—not that Scott reviewed every recent Alien release.

For context, see the BFI’s 2017 interview with Scott.

What can be stated confidently?

  • Scott’s direct, pre-release remarks about Blade Runner 2049 in The Guardian and Den of Geek were favorable.
  • The harsh review discussed in The Guardian interview was Kael’s criticism of the 1982 Blade Runner, not Scott’s verdict on the 2017 sequel.
  • The newer Alien praise is reported through Álvarez’s account; it is not independently verified here as a direct statement from Scott.
