The separate preliminary finding reported by the Associated Press was cocaine exposure; an Argentine official speaking anonymously cautioned that it did not accurately measure how much cocaine was in Payne’s blood. Neither report establishes that drugs caused his fall.
What substances did early reports say were found?
On October 21, 2024, ABC News’ Good Morning America reported that sources describing a partial autopsy said Payne had multiple substances in his system, including “pink cocaine,” cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack. That is an account attributed to sources; it is not a final forensic toxicology report reproduced for the public. Source: ABC News
Separately, the Associated Press reported on October 21 that an Argentine official speaking anonymously said preliminary results indicated cocaine exposure. The official cautioned that those results did not accurately indicate how much cocaine was circulating in Payne’s blood when he died. AP said at the time that final toxicology results were not expected to be public for some weeks. Source: Associated Press
What was reported as the cause of death?
ABC News reported that the preliminary autopsy attributed Payne’s death to “multiple traumas” and internal and external bleeding after a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony. The report described 25 injuries and said the head injuries were sufficient to cause death. Source: ABC News
#1 Best Overall
- CREDIBLE: This test is CLIA Waived for home or over the counter (OTC) use, utilizes the same technology as lab screening tests, and its results are accepted in most professional and clinical settings.
- COMPREHENSIVE: This lab-grade test can detect 14 drugs simultaneously: Buprenorphine (BUP), Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), Opiates (OPI - 2000 ng/mL cut-off level), Amphetamine (AMP), Barbiturates (BAR), Benzodiazepines (BZO), Cocaine (COC), Methamphetamine (MET), Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), Methadone (MTD), Oxycodone (OXY), Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene (PPX), and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA).
- ACCURATE: More than 99% accurate, it uses lab-recommended cutoff levels for each drug and includes a temperature strip to verify the temperature of the fresh sample for Specimen Validity Testing.
- EASY TO USE: To use, simply remove the cap, collect urine in the test cup, wait a FULL 5 minutes, and then read the result; disposable plastic gloves are included, a negative result shows two lines, a positive result shows only the control line, a faint test line still means negative, and results should not be read after 5 minutes.
That preliminary medical account does not establish why Payne fell. The toxicology reporting gives no confirmed concentrations for the listed substances and no substance-by-substance analysis of their possible role in the fall. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat the reported substances as proof that any one of them caused it.
What did the preliminary autopsy report about the scene?
ABC News said the preliminary autopsy found no signs of a fight and that Payne was alone in the room at the time of death. The prosecutor’s office requested additional histopathological, biochemical and toxicological examinations. Source: ABC News

Is there a final toxicology result or inquest conclusion?
The reports cited here do not establish a final public toxicology panel, confirmed levels for each substance, or a final inquest conclusion. The toxicology details reported in October 2024 remain distinct from the later procedural updates about the UK inquest.
At a pre-inquest review in November 2025, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said he would seek full reports and eyewitness statements; the review was adjourned until May 7, 2026. Source: ITV

ITV reported that at the May 2026 hearing Butler said there had been no further disclosure of evidence from Argentina via the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office since the previous review. The hearing was adjourned to another pre-inquest review at the start of December. That is the schedule reported at the time and may change; it is not a final ruling on the circumstances of Payne’s death. Source: ITV
