Regina King has said the death of her son, Ian Alexander Jr., changed who she is, but she has not described grief as something she has finished overcoming. In a March 2024 interview with Robin Roberts, King called grief “love that has no place to go” and said the sadness would remain with her. Her later interviews added reflections on faith, depression and the difficulty of understanding a child’s pain.
What Regina King said about her son’s death
Ian Alexander Jr. died by suicide in January 2022, aged 26, according to ABC News and The Guardian. On March 14, 2024, King spoke with Robin Roberts for a televised interview focused on Ian and her grief. It coincided with the promotion of Shirley, which King dedicated to her son.
King described the loss as a dividing line in her life. “I’m a different person, you know, now than I was Jan. 19,” she told Roberts. She also said, “I understand that grief is love that has no place to go.” The phrase was her way of describing the continuing love she feels for Ian, not a claim that grief follows a simple path or ends at a particular point.
She said, “The sadness will never go away. It’ll always be with me.” King also spoke about anger, guilt and the difficulty of accepting the loss, while saying that she respects and understands Ian’s experience. Her comments hold those feelings together rather than presenting acceptance as a completed stage.

How King wants to honor Ian
King has said she wants to speak about Ian in the present, keeping his place in her life and family visible. She recalled the joy he brought to those around him and described the bond as continuing despite his physical absence. This is part of how she has publicly honored him; she has not presented it as a prescription for how other people should grieve.
What she said about faith and depression in 2024
In a separate interview published by Harper’s Bazaar on March 18, 2024, King reflected on Ian’s depression, his outward joy and her own faith. “I feel like I am in a place now where my faith has really been challenged,” she said. She also observed, “That’s why I know that a smile doesn’t always mean happy.”

Those remarks describe King’s reflections as a mother after Ian’s death. They do not establish a clinical explanation of his experience or suggest that his depression could reliably have been identified from his appearance.

King said: “Seeing that pain in your child, who is working to beat depression — you know, whatever ‘beat depression’ is — is really … you feel helpless.”

This was a distinct conversation from the 2024 interview with Roberts. Together, King’s public remarks show how she has spoken at different times about grief, faith, depression and her continuing connection to Ian, without reducing his death to a single lesson or her grief to a neat resolution.
