In the U.S., it opened with 2.61 million equivalent album units, including 1.914 million traditional album sales; it also set a striking first-week streaming mark. Those measures are different, and none should be mistaken for a count of copies alone.
Did The Tortured Poets Department beat Taylor Swift’s personal best?
Yes, by several measures. Billboard reported 2.61 million U.S. equivalent album units for the album’s first tracking week, which ended April 25, 2024. That was a combined chart measure, not 2.61 million purchased copies. For traditional album sales, Billboard reported 1.914 million.
The distinction matters: equivalent units combine purchases and streaming activity under the chart’s methodology, while traditional album sales count purchases. The numbers describe the same U.S. tracking week but answer different questions.
How many copies did The Tortured Poets Department sell in its U.S. first week?
Billboard, citing Luminate data, reported 1.914 million traditional album sales in the United States during the tracking week ending April 25, 2024. That total included physical formats and digital downloads—not just physical copies.

| Cassettes | A little over 21,500 |

The format figures are Billboard’s report of Luminate data for the album’s U.S. opening week. They are components of the traditional-sales total, not additional units to add to the 2.61 million equivalent-unit figure.
What streaming record did the album set?
Billboard reported 891.37 million on-demand official streams for the deluxe set’s 31 songs in the U.S. tracking week ending April 25, 2024, based on Luminate data. Separately, Spotify said the album became its most-streamed album in one week on that platform. The Billboard total is not a Spotify-only figure.
