Reba McEntire did not publicly defend a specific claim by Kelly Clarkson about her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. In October 2021, while Clarkson and Blackstock’s divorce was still underway, McEntire said she loved both of them and would not take sides. Her remarks were support for both people, not an endorsement of an identified allegation.
What Reba McEntire said about Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock
In an October 2021 interview with Entertainment Tonight, McEntire described keeping in touch with Clarkson and said she would not choose between her friend and her stepson. ET quoted her: “Kelly and I do talk, we text and I love them both, and so I can’t play favorites because I’ve been a friend of Kelly for a long time.” Entertainment Tonight’s report also quoted McEntire describing Blackstock as her son in all but name: “Brandon’s been my son forever it seems. Although he’s my stepson, I still love him like he’s my total — my blood, so I’m praying for ‘em both ’cause I love ‘em both.”
Fox News reported a similar message from McEntire in an interview with Extra: “Brandon’s my stepson, Kelly’s my good friend… I am pulling for both of them.” The report also quoted her saying, “I hope they’re happy and healthy and pull though this,” and that she prayed people would encourage both of them. Fox News’s account characterizes her stance as refusing to play favorites.
Did McEntire defend a particular claim by Clarkson?
The cited interviews do not identify a specific Clarkson claim that McEntire supported or confirmed. Her comments were about caring for both Clarkson and Blackstock during a difficult period. Calling them a defense of Clarkson’s claims goes further than the remarks themselves establish.

How the remarks fit into the divorce timeline
Clarkson filed for divorce in June 2020, citing irreconcilable differences, according to the Associated Press and Fox News. McEntire’s comments came in October 2021, when the divorce was ongoing. The divorce was finalized in March 2022, according to Entertainment Tonight’s later report.
The separate commissions case and its settlement
The divorce should not be confused with a later dispute about commissions for work Blackstock had done as Clarkson’s manager. In November 2023, a California labor commissioner ruled that Blackstock was to return $2,641,374 in commissions, as reported by Entertainment Tonight. In May 2024, the parties requested dismissal after reaching a confidential settlement. Clarkson’s lawyer, Ed F. McPherson, told ET: “The case has been settled in its entirety. It is a confidential settlement.” The settlement’s terms were not made public, so the 2023 award should not be presented as the final amount paid.

What is known now
Blackstock died of cancer in August 2025 at age 48, the Associated Press reported. A family representative told AP: “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years.” AP also reported that Blackstock and Clarkson had two children, River and Remington. That later news does not change the meaning of McEntire’s 2021 remarks: she expressed affection for both people and hoped they would be supported.
