Mariah Carey’s parents, Patricia Carey and Alfred Roy Carey, divorced when she was about three years old. Her mother raised her, and her father’s presence in her life became limited after the split. Alfred Roy Carey died of cancer in 2002. Patricia Carey died in August 2024, and her daughter’s announcement did not give a cause of death. The details of the family’s private life come mainly from Carey’s own memoir and interviews, and from a few contemporary press profiles.
How the marriage ended
A 1993 People profile reports that Mariah’s parents separated when she was three and that her visits with her father dwindled over time. A 1995 Washington Post profile gives the year of the divorce as 1972, which fits Mariah’s age at the time. Neither piece is a court record, so the exact year is best attributed to the Washington Post profile rather than stated as a legal fact. Public accounts do not identify a single cause for the split, and this article does not offer one.

Who the parents were
Patricia Carey worked as an opera singer and voice coach. Alfred Roy Carey was an aeronautical engineer. Both professions appear in the 1993 People profile and the 1995 Washington Post profile.
| Parent | Profession (as reported in 1990s profiles) | Role after the divorce | Death |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patricia Carey | Opera singer and voice coach | Primarily raised Mariah | August 2024; cause not stated in her daughter’s announcement reported by CBS News |
| Alfred Roy Carey | Aeronautical engineer | Limited contact with his daughter, according to Carey | 2002 from cancer, per an Associated Press report; exact date not stated in that report |
Life with her mother
Carey was raised primarily by Patricia after the divorce. In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, published by Henry Holt, Carey writes that both parents worked hard to give their children a better life. The publisher’s excerpt includes her sentence: “Both my parents worked very hard so we could live in neighborhoods where we could glimpse that elusive ‘better life’ and feel ‘safe.'” That is Carey’s account of her childhood, not an independent record of it.

When Patricia died in August 2024, Carey said in a statement reported by CBS News that she had spent the previous week with her mother. Her words were: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend.” She also said: “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.”
Life with her father
Carey described her relationship with her father after the divorce as limited. A 1995 Washington Post profile says she seldom saw Alfred Roy afterward and characterizes their later relationship as cordial but distant. Those descriptions come from the profile writers and from Carey’s own remarks, so they show how the relationship was presented at the time rather than what was felt inside the family.
Alfred Roy Carey died of cancer in 2002, according to an Associated Press report. Public coverage of his death is brief, and it does not describe any reconciliation or late contact between father and daughter beyond what Carey has said in her own accounts.
What is publicly established and what is not
- Established: the divorce when Mariah was about three; her mother’s role as her primary parent; her father’s limited presence afterward; both parents’ professions; Alfred Roy Carey’s death from cancer in 2002; Patricia Carey’s death in August 2024.
- Not established: the cause of Patricia Carey’s death; the private reasons for the divorce; the day of Alfred Roy Carey’s death; any court record of the separation.
- Carey’s own account: her memoir and interviews are the main source for how the family felt. Treat them as her recollections.
