The available reliable sources do not establish one definitive cause for Taran Noah Smith and Heidi Van Pelt’s divorce. A contemporaneous 2007 profile reports that Van Pelt filed in early February and sought a portion of marital property, financial support, and attorney fees. Those reported requests are not a court finding about why the marriage ended.

What is known about the divorce filing?

The Pitch’s April 26, 2007 profile reports that Van Pelt filed for divorce in early February. It says she sought a portion of marital property, financial support, and attorney fees. The report provides relationship and business context, but does not establish that the requests were granted or identify a definitive cause for the breakup. Read The Pitch’s 2007 profile.

A filing describes what a party requested; it is not proof that a court accepted the request or that the allegations behind it were true. The available sources do not include an accessible primary divorce filing or an authoritative final disposition of the related business claims.

How does their business fit into the story?

The Pitch’s profile discusses the couple’s business as part of the contemporaneous context around their relationship and divorce. That context may help explain why business and marital matters appeared together in coverage, but it does not establish that the business dispute caused the divorce. Nor do the reviewed sources settle the ultimate legal outcome of those business claims.

Do Smith’s comments about his family explain the divorce?

No. In a later interview about repairing his relationship with his mother, Candy Bennici, Smith described earlier family conflict: “In 2001, there was definitely some teenage angst-driven strife between us, but it’s common between parents and children. It was enlarged because of the media and things like that.” The comment is about his relationship with his mother, not his marriage to Van Pelt. Read the Headlines & Global News interview.

A 2002 Deseret News report also predates the divorce. Smith said then that relations with his family were improving, which is historical context for the family story, not evidence about why his later marriage ended. Read the Deseret News report.

What should not be treated as an explanation?

The Pitch’s 2007 profile describes Smith as 17 and Van Pelt as 32 at the time they married. Those are the ages reported in that profile; the age difference is not, by itself, evidence of what caused their divorce. Similarly, a reported request for property or support does not establish either spouse’s motives or prove a particular narrative about the marriage.

The later interview also notes that Smith contributed to Bennici’s book, Stardom Happens: Nurturing Your Child in the Entertainment Business. That is background on child performers and family experience, not a source for the divorce’s cause.

So, what really caused the divorce?

The sources establish that Van Pelt reportedly filed in early February 2007 and sought property, financial support, and attorney fees. They do not establish a single verified cause for the marriage’s end. Without an accessible primary filing, a final account of the related business claims, or a verified statement that settles the question, claims assigning blame or stating a definitive reason go beyond what these sources support.
