Raven-Symoné’s November 2025 comments draw a distinction between The Cosby Show’s cultural influence and Bill Cosby’s alleged conduct. She praised the show’s legacy while saying that the accusations against Cosby did not excuse anything. Her remarks are not a legal judgment about the case.
What did Raven-Symoné say about Bill Cosby?
On the Hate to Break It to Ya podcast in November 2025, Raven-Symoné said, “Separate the creator from the creation, and that’s just where I live,” according to The Independent. Us Weekly reported her describing the show’s influence this way: “The creation changed America [and] changed television.” She also said Cosby had been accused of “some horrific things” and that this “does not excuse [anything].” (Us Weekly)

Together, the comments express a distinction: Raven-Symoné credits the television series with cultural significance, but does not treat that legacy as a defense of the allegations against its creator. Why does Raven-Symoné have a connection to the show?
Raven-Symoné played Olivia Kendall, the on-screen step-granddaughter of Cosby’s character, joining The Cosby Show in its final years. She appeared from 1989 until the series ended in 1992, according to The New York Times. That personal connection helps explain why her comments address both the program and Cosby, while not making her remarks a judgment on the criminal case.

What did she say in 2014?
In 2014, Raven-Symoné rejected a fabricated online story alleging that she had been taken advantage of on the show. She said the cast and crew had treated her kindly: “Everyone on that show treated me with nothing but kindness. Now keep me out of this!” The Los Angeles Times described the story as fabricated. That response concerned a false personal allegation about her; it should not be conflated with her later comments about separating the series’ legacy from Cosby’s conduct.

Cosby was convicted in 2018 on three counts of aggravated indecent assault and sentenced to three to ten years, according to the case reporting. In 2021, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court vacated the conviction. Its decision concerned a prior district attorney’s non-prosecution decision and the consequences that decision had for Cosby’s later civil testimony and subsequent prosecution. It was a procedural and constitutional ruling—not a finding that the allegations were false or a decision that Cosby was factually innocent. Read the Pennsylvania Supreme Court opinion.
