According to a 2025 report by Ajay Kamalakaran in Scroll.in, Rajiv Gandhi wrote that the Khatyn memorial “evokes deep feelings” and warned that the consequences of unleashing war would be “much more deplorable” in the future. Gandhi made the entry during a May 1985 visit to Khatyn, in what was then the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic.
What did Rajiv Gandhi write at Khatyn?
Scroll.in reproduces Gandhi’s guestbook entry as follows:
“The Khatyn memorial has a strong cultural impact and evokes deep feelings among all who have visited it,” Rajiv Gandhi wrote in the guestbook. “Several hardships were inflicted on the people of Minsk and Byelorussia, leading to suffering in a place of well-defined ideals.”
Reflecting on the massacre that took place 42 years earlier, Gandhi added, “May this serve as a warning to all those who are responsible for unleashing the outbreak of war, given that today its consequences would be much more deplorable.”

The report’s wording moves from the emotional effect of the memorial, to the suffering of people in Minsk and Byelorussia, and then to a warning about war. The quotation is attributed to Gandhi by the report; its author says he wrote it in the Khatyn memorial guestbook. Read the Scroll.in report.
When and where did Gandhi write it?
Kamalakaran’s report places the visit in May 1985, during Gandhi’s state visit to the Soviet Union. He visited the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic—now Belarus—and went to Khatyn on his first day in the republic. The entry refers to the memorial by name; the report also describes other guestbook entries from Gandhi’s stops elsewhere, which are distinct from this one.

What does the Khatyn memorial commemorate?
The inscription refers to a massacre at Khatyn in 1943. The 2025 Scroll.in article reports that 149 people were killed and identifies the perpetrators as members of Schutzmannschaft Battalion 118, consisting mostly of Ukrainian Nazi collaborators. Those details are reported by that article.
Khatyn is a memorial site laid out around the former village. A memorial reference describes marked locations of houses, a sculpture and grave marker, a cemetery of destroyed villages, and a wall naming extermination sites and forced-labour camps. How firmly is the guestbook wording established?
The available wording comes from Kamalakaran’s secondary report, published by Scroll.in on March 29, 2025. The original guestbook page or an archival image of it is not available here for independent comparison. The quotation should therefore be understood as the text reproduced and attributed to Gandhi by that report, not as a transcription independently checked against the original.
