Prince Harry acknowledged Pat Tillman’s mother, Mary, and the Tillman family while accepting the 2024 Pat Tillman Award for Service. He thanked Pat’s widow, Marie, for attending and said, “This award belongs to them, not to me,” referring to the veterans who presented it. The remarks came after Mary Tillman had publicly questioned ESPN’s decision to select him.
What Prince Harry said at the ESPYS
Harry accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPYS on July 11, 2024. During his remarks, he acknowledged Mary Tillman and the Tillman family, and thanked Marie Tillman, Pat’s widow, for being there. The Associated Press reported Harry saying, “This award belongs to them, not to me,” referring to the veterans who presented the award. ESPN’s official video records the acceptance speech.
The acknowledgement is what the available accounts establish. They do not establish how Mary Tillman interpreted the remarks or whether they changed her view of ESPN’s decision.
Why Mary Tillman objected to the selection
Before the ceremony, Mary Tillman criticized ESPN’s choice of Harry. The Los Angeles Times reported that she believed people working in the veteran community would have been more fitting recipients. That was her criticism of the selection, not a statement about what Harry later said in his speech.

Why ESPN said it chose Harry
ESPN defended its decision by pointing to the Invictus Games Foundation’s work promoting healing through sport for military service members and veterans. In its event announcement, ESPN said Harry was being honored for making a positive impact on the veteran community through sport. Its official video likewise connects the award to his work with the Invictus Games, which serves wounded, injured, or sick service members.
That explanation describes ESPN’s stated rationale; it does not settle whether Harry was the most appropriate recipient. The network’s reasoning, Mary Tillman’s objection, and Harry’s acknowledgement at the ceremony are distinct parts of the story.

What the award controversy does—and does not—show
The Associated Press reported that Harry served in the British military for 10 years, deployed to Afghanistan twice as a helicopter pilot, and created the Invictus Games in 2014. Those details provide context for ESPN’s stated rationale, but they do not by themselves prove or disprove the award’s appropriateness.
The reporting establishes that Mary Tillman objected before the ceremony and that Harry acknowledged her and the Tillman family during it. It does not establish that she attended, approved of the award, or changed her position afterward. Pat Tillman’s widow, Marie, is the family member identified in the AP account as attending.
