In his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, on May 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV recalled Pope Francis’s Easter blessing and declared: “God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail!” The Vatican transcript places the words in an address centered on peace, dialogue and encounter.
What did Pope Leo XIV say?
Speaking from the external Loggia of Blessings at the Vatican Basilica, Leo referred to Francis, who had blessed Rome and the world on Easter morning. He then said:
“We can still hear the faint yet ever courageous voice of Pope Francis as he blessed Rome, the Pope who blessed Rome, who gave his blessing to the world, the whole world, on the morning of Easter. Allow me to extend that same blessing: God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail!”
The shorter phrase “evil will not prevail” is part of this blessing, not a separate statement. The quotation follows the official Vatican English transcript of Leo’s address, delivered May 8, 2025. Read the Vatican transcript.
