The report describes Peter Mandelson suggesting a villa near Positano for Jeffrey Epstein—not inviting Epstein to Mandelson’s own house. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, in a report published with BBC Verify, says the email was sent in August 2010 and described the villa as offering privacy and rooms for Epstein’s “guests.”

What the reported email said

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism says an email chain from August 2010 included a message in which Mandelson recommended a place to stay on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, near Positano. The report quotes the message as saying:

“Found you a great place to stay on the Amalfi coast near to Positano. Zeferelli home converted into beautiful suites and privacy with accompanying rooms for your ‘guests’.”

That is the wording published by the investigation; it should be treated as the outlet’s transcription of the reported email, not as a quotation independently verified here against the original file. The reference to “guests” does not, by itself, establish who those people were or why they might stay there.

How the report attributed the message

The sender’s name was redacted in the file published with the report. The Bureau says it matched visible parts of the email address to an address Mandelson used and checked the surrounding correspondence. Its identification of Mandelson as the sender is therefore the outlet’s attribution based on those details.

When it was sent—and the reported context

The Bureau dates the email to August 2010 and says Mandelson wrote that he was due back in London from “Myk,” which the report describes as shorthand for Mykonos. The report places the message one month after Epstein had been released from house arrest following his conviction for child sex offences.

That timing is part of the report’s account of the correspondence. It does not change what the message itself establishes: a reported accommodation suggestion, not evidence in itself of a further offence.

The email is separate from the appointment and vetting controversy

There are distinct documentary and official strands to the wider story. The UK Foreign Affairs Committee says the US Department of Justice released a large set of Epstein-related files on 30 January 2026, including correspondence with Mandelson. The Committee also examined Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador and the government’s release of related papers.

In a statement to Parliament on 20 April 2026, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said UK Security Vetting had recommended that Developed Vetting be denied, but Foreign Office officials granted clearance. Starmer said: “I should not have appointed Peter Mandelson.” Those statements concern the vetting and appointment process; they are not findings about the villa email.

What is known about the police investigation

The Associated Press reported that police arrested Mandelson on 23 February 2026 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. An arrest on suspicion is not a conviction or proof of guilt. The sources cited here do not establish the later outcome of the investigation as of 8 October 2026.

The US Department of Justice says its Epstein Library may be updated as further records are identified and warns that searches can be incomplete or unreliable for some document formats. The existence of a searchable archive should not be treated as proof that every relevant record has been found or that a particular interpretation of the correspondence is settled.
