In a report published on 29 March 2021, PerthNow described abusive messages sent to Monique Fontana’s mental-health Instagram page and recounted her earlier public account of living with severe OCD symptoms. Fontana said she blocked the sender; the sender was not identified in the screenshot described by the outlet.
What happened to Monique Fontana?
PerthNow reporter Lily Hoffmann wrote that Fontana had shared details of her OCD the previous year, while Patrick Cripps was in the AFL hub. Fontana later created the Instagram page @yourmentalhealthsafespace to document what she called her “endeavours to find purpose.”
According to Hoffmann’s account, Fontana posted a screenshot of hateful direct messages sent to that page. The sender’s identity had been removed. One message attacked Cripps and criticized his football performance; the same sender also alleged he had been cheating on Fontana. That was an allegation in an abusive message, not a verified finding.
What did Fontana say about the messages?
PerthNow quoted Fontana as saying: “Lucky my partner and I are resilient, but this can really hurt people.” She said she blocked the sender rather than naming them or trying to shame them: “I wouldn’t say the name of this person that sent this because I would never want to shame them and make them feel low or down, but I just blocked them instead.”

What did Fontana share about OCD?
Hoffmann’s report recounted Fontana’s personal description of severe symptoms. At the height of her illness, she said she repeated phrases about feared outcomes and vomited a meal each day. The report also said Fontana traced her initial diagnosis to a period when she was a student nurse and witnessed a patient nearly die. She then became fixated on the possibility that she had contracted an infection acquired in hospital.

Fontana described repeating a reassuring phrase in her head: “I have to repeat that in my head multiple times. It’s reassuring.” These are experiences attributed to Fontana in a news report, not diagnostic criteria or medical advice. PerthNow’s article did not identify a named professional making a clinical statement or provide a population statistic about OCD.

The account is about a past post reported on 29 March 2021, not a current incident.
