Pamela Anderson reportedly described acting as “a survival mechanism” and said being an artist is “solitary, lonely and full of secrets.” A PEOPLE guest essay is the source of those remarks, according to secondary reporting; the original essay was not available for direct review, so its publication date and wider context remain unconfirmed.
What Anderson reportedly wrote about being an artist
In the reported PEOPLE essay, Anderson described artistic life in starkly personal terms: “Being an artist is solitary, lonely and full of secrets.” She also wrote, “Acting is a survival mechanism.” Those excerpts present acting not simply as a profession, but as a way people may cope with difficult experiences and find a means of expression. That interpretation should be kept within the limits of the short passages reported; the full essay has not been verified.
The report also attributes this reflection to Anderson: “I’ve been there. I’ve been objectified at times, and written off.” It connects the remarks to her own experiences and her role in The Last Showgirl, but the unavailable essay means its complete argument and the precise context of each line are not established. PEOPLE
How the comments connect to The Last Showgirl
Anderson plays Shelly Gardner, a veteran Las Vegas showgirl facing the loss of the work around which she has built her life. The secondary report frames the essay alongside that performance and says Anderson described performers as understanding the “life and death” stakes of being seen, heard and loved. This is the report’s account of the connection, not a substitute for the full essay.

A separate reflection on art and healing
In a February 2025 interview with The Guardian, Anderson spoke separately about playing Shelly and said that working on an art project can heal parts of a person they did not know were hurt. That interview offers related context for her reported description of acting as survival, but it is not part of the PEOPLE essay. The Guardian
What is—and is not—known about the essay
The available reporting does not establish when the PEOPLE guest essay was published or provide its complete text. The quoted language should therefore be attributed to Anderson as reported, rather than treated as independently checked against the original. Her comments are personal testimony, not statistical evidence about artists’ loneliness.
