O.J. Simpson publicly said in May 2023 that he had cancer, had undergone chemotherapy and thought he had beaten it. He did not name the cancer type in that video. In February 2024, he denied being in hospice and described his health as good while acknowledging unspecified issues. His family announced his death from cancer on April 11, 2024; his attorney later said the death certificate listed prostate cancer.

May 2023: Simpson disclosed cancer and chemotherapy

In a video posted on X, then Twitter, Simpson said he had recently “caught cancer” and “had to do the whole chemo thing.” He added, “It looks like I beat it,” according to ABC News. His remarks disclosed cancer and chemotherapy, but did not identify the type of cancer. The original post was not available for independent review, so these quotations are attributed to ABC News’ account of the video.

February 9, 2024: He denied being in hospice

Responding to reports that he was in hospice, Simpson said, “Hospice? Hospice?! You talkin’ about hospice?” He continued, “No, I’m not in any hospice. I don’t know who put that out there.” He also said, “You can’t trust the media,” and described plans to host friends for the Super Bowl, ending with, “All is well, you know?” Us Weekly and TheWrap reported the video. This was a denial of hospice status, not a denial that he had cancer.

February 11, 2024: He said his health was good

In a Super Bowl video, Simpson thanked people who had contacted him and said, “My health is good.” He added, “Obviously I’m dealing with some issues, but I think I’m just about over it, and I’ll be back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks.” He then predicted a San Francisco 49ers win, as reported by The Los Angeles Times. He did not name cancer in this update.

April 2024: His family announced his death; his attorney identified the cancer

April 11: The family’s announcement

Simpson’s family announced on April 11 that he had died the previous day. Its statement said: “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.” The family also asked for privacy and grace. This was the family’s statement, not a remark by Simpson.

April 27: The death certificate was described by his attorney

The Los Angeles Times reported that attorney Malcolm LaVergne said Simpson’s death certificate confirmed prostate cancer and listed no other causes. That later account established the cancer type reported in the death certificate; Simpson had not named it in the May 2023 video.

What was Simpson’s last public statement?

The final personal post identified in the reporting above was Simpson’s February 11, 2024 Super Bowl video. The April 11 post announcing his death came from his family, not from him. A viral claim that an “I did it” post was his final message should not be treated as authentic: PolitiFact found no evidence to support it.
