But one intellectual’s conduct cannot stand as evidence of how progressives generally behave. The broader lesson is narrower and more useful: political commitments to justice mean little if personal loyalty or skepticism of institutions becomes a reason to discount victims.
What did Chomsky say about Epstein?
The most pointed evidence is a February 2019 message attributed to Chomsky and reported by The Guardian in 2026. According to the newspaper’s account of communications Epstein sent to a lawyer and publicist, Epstein represented that Chomsky had advised him about negative media attention. The reported advice included: “The best way to proceed is to ignore it.” The message also referred to “the hysteria that has developed about abuse of women.”
Those words, if accurately represented, invite strong criticism. They appear to treat public attention to abuse allegations chiefly as a media or due-process problem, rather than as a reason to take victims’ claims seriously. But the message is reported through Epstein’s communications: it does not, by itself, establish the full context of the exchange, what Chomsky knew about particular allegations, or what he intended. It is evidence for criticism of the advice attributed to him, not a complete account of his knowledge or motives.
How did Chomsky know Epstein?
Associated Press reporting says the relationship was active by 2015, when Epstein and Chomsky corresponded about academic subjects and Epstein offered the use of his New York apartment and New Mexico residence. Valeria Chomsky later said she and Noam were introduced to Epstein in 2015.

A testimonial attributed to Chomsky in a released document collection describes wide-ranging conversations and meetings Epstein arranged with academics and political figures. It calls Epstein “a highly valued friend and regular source of intellectual exchange and stimulation.” The displayed record does not establish when the testimonial was written, so it should not be assigned a more precise date.
The relationship also touched financial matters. The Guardian reported that Chomsky sought Epstein’s advice during a family financial and trust dispute, and that Valeria Chomsky arranged for an associate to send a check connected to a linguistics challenge. These details show contact over financial matters; they do not establish financial wrongdoing by Chomsky.

Did Chomsky know about Epstein’s conviction?
That remains unresolved in the accounts described here. Epstein was convicted in Florida in 2008 of soliciting prostitution from an underage girl. Valeria Chomsky later said that she and Noam were unaware of that conviction when they met Epstein in 2015, believed his claim that he was being unfairly persecuted, and were naive and uninformed. She described Epstein as having created a manipulative narrative and acknowledged “serious errors in judgment.”
That is her retrospective explanation, not independent verification of what each person knew or when. AP also noted that allegations about Epstein had received extensive news coverage by 2015. That public context matters, but it does not establish what Chomsky personally saw, understood, or believed. The available accounts do not settle the couple’s knowledge timeline.

The strongest political critique is a tension between public commitments to justice and a private willingness to extend trust and solidarity to a powerful friend while treating allegations of abuse as a problem of media excess or due process. The reported 2019 advice makes that tension especially sharp. Someone can be deeply critical of power in public life and still exercise poor judgment—or apply skepticism selectively—when a powerful person is a friend.
That is an interpretation of one person’s conduct, not proof that progressives as a group share the same blind spot. The relevant failure could be personal, institutional, ideological, or some combination. A critique of progressive politics is strongest when it asks how commitments to victims and accountability hold up under social pressure, rather than treating one prominent figure as representative of an entire movement.

There is also a limit to framing Epstein’s cultivation of influential contacts as a specifically progressive problem. AP described his network as crossing ideological lines, naming contacts from Chomsky to Steve Bannon. That context does not excuse any individual’s choices; it cautions against turning one relationship into evidence of a political tendency without broader evidence.

- Contemporaneous records and reported excerpts: The Guardian’s account of Epstein’s 2019 communications supplies the clearest basis for evaluating the advice attributed to Chomsky. The displayed testimonial establishes praise for Epstein and a friendship, but not when that testimonial was written.
- Later explanation: Valeria Chomsky’s AP-reported statement offers the couple’s account of their introduction and understanding. It should be treated as an explanation, not as independently verified proof of either person’s knowledge at every point.
- Limits of the record: The available email collection consists of machine-extracted or transcribed records and is not a complete independent authentication exercise. The cited accounts do not establish Chomsky’s precise knowledge timeline or motives.
These distinctions do not make criticism impossible. They make it more precise: the relationship and the reported advice warrant scrutiny, while claims about exactly what Chomsky knew, why he acted as he did, or what progressives generally do require evidence beyond what these accounts establish.
