He asked the Stranger Things creators to add a tower conversation because he felt Will’s coming-out scene left the friends without enough closure. Schnapp said the moment makes clear that Mike loves Will as a best friend and that Will’s future is hopeful.
Why Schnapp asked for a tower conversation
In a post-finale interview with the Los Angeles Times published Dec. 31, 2025, Schnapp said the tower exchange was not in the original script. He asked creators Matt and Ross Duffer to include it because the coming-out scene centered on Will’s feelings but did not give Will and Mike a separate conversation about their friendship.
“I felt like, with the coming out scene, there wasn’t enough closure between Will and Mike,” Schnapp said. He described the added scene as confirmation that “Mike loves him as a best friend, and they will always be friends.” In his account, it resolves the strain of Will’s confession without turning Mike’s affection into romantic reciprocation.
What the finale says about Will’s feelings
The timeline matters: Will’s crush on Mike was established before the finale. In a 2022 Variety interview, Schnapp said, “It’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike.” He discussed the Season 4 van scene, where Will expressed those feelings indirectly while speaking as if he were describing Eleven’s emotions.

Netflix Tudum’s Dec. 26, 2025 account of Season 5 Episode 7 describes Will coming out to friends and family and referring to a crush on someone who does not share his feelings. Schnapp told Tudum that he read the scene repeatedly for a month and found parallels between his own journey and Will’s. Co-creator Ross Duffer said Will’s self-acceptance mattered to his confidence before the final battle.

Schnapp characterized Will’s future as hopeful, but not because the finale pairs him with Mike. “It was about finding the person that was right for him, and in the meantime, kind of just loving himself,” he told the Los Angeles Times. That framing distinguishes Will’s unrequited crush from the friendship closure Schnapp says the tower scene provides.
