Donnie Wahlberg was a member of New Kids on the Block, the pop group known as NKOTB. He was one of five members of the group, which formed in Massachusetts in 1984.
The group and its lineup
New Kids on the Block is usually shortened to NKOTB. The official biography published by Universal Music Japan lists the five members as Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight, and Jonathan Knight. A record-company announcement from BMG, “New Kids on the Block Sign With BMG,” gives the same five members and the 1984 formation year.

How Wahlberg got into the band
Wahlberg started the group. A CBS Entertainment talent biography dated June 2018 recounts that he began a band at age 14, and that within a few years it moved from playing high school parties to becoming the pop act New Kids on the Block. A separate biography, “Donnie Wahlberg – Wife, Kids & Career,” last updated April 27, 2021, reports that he auditioned for the group. The sources available for this article do not describe the audition in detail, so the account of how the lineup came together is limited to that.
