Pop-punk is the label most often attached to the group, and it fits the early records well, but it does not describe the whole catalogue. Later albums moved into pop and funk, and the 2023 album This Is Why is usually described in terms of post-punk and alternative rock. The most accurate answer is a layered one: alternative rock overall, with a pop-punk starting point and clear stylistic changes over time.
The short answer
If you need one phrase, use “alternative rock with pop-punk roots.” It keeps the familiar early-career tag, names the broader rock identity the band uses today, and leaves room for the albums that do not sound like pop-punk at all. Calling Paramore a pure pop-punk band gets the first chapter right and the rest of the catalogue wrong.

Why “pop-punk” is the label people use
Paramore’s early identity is closely tied to pop-punk. TIME places the band within the early-2000s pop-punk scene and describes “Decode” as the song that cemented the group’s status as a pop-punk icon. The Associated Press also uses “pop-punk band” as a standard shorthand when it introduces the group. Both descriptions reflect how the band was heard when it emerged, which is why the tag has stuck long after the sound moved on.
The label is useful, but it answers a question about a period rather than the band as a whole. Readers searching for the genre are usually trying to place the group’s best-known songs, and for those early songs the tag works.

How the sound changed from album to album
Paramore’s records do not share one stable style, so the honest comparison is era by era. The table below summarises how the main sources describe each stage.
| Release or era | How sources describe it | Punk or pop emphasis | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early records | Pop-punk | Punk-leaning pop-punk identity | TIME; Associated Press |
| Self-titled album (2013) | Punk/pop identity with funk, gospel choir and strings added to the mix | Balanced, with wider experimentation | GRAMMY.com interview with Hayley Williams |
| After Laughter | Pop-oriented, retro styling with funky basslines and synths | Pop and funk | TIME; Apple Music |
| This Is Why (2023) | Alternative rock on the band’s official site; post-punk in Apple Music’s description | Rock-leaning, with a varied palette | Paramore official site; Apple Music; Associated Press |
Early records: pop-punk
The early catalogue is the part of the discography where pop-punk is a close fit. This is the period that gave the band its public identity, and the sources that cover it most directly use that term without much qualification.
Rank #2
The self-titled album (2013): experimentation within the punk/pop identity
The 2013 self-titled record is where the band’s sound starts to widen. In a GRAMMY.com interview, Hayley Williams was asked about adding funk slap bass, a gospel choir and strings without giving up the signature punk/pop sound. Her answer was that the group approached it by trying ideas before ruling them out. Asked whether the band had stayed true to the genre that made it, she said: “As far as remaining true to the genre that made us who we are, I don’t think we did anything all that sacrilegious.”
In a separate interview about the same album, Williams described her influences on it this way: “I hear more Failure, new wave-y stuff, and Jimmy Eat World than I do even when we were writing straight-up pop punk or rock songs.” That remark points away from a single label and toward a band borrowing from several rock traditions at once.
Rank #3
After Laughter: a clear move toward pop and funk
This is the album where a pop-punk label stops fitting most of the record. TIME describes it as a sonic pivot, built on retro styling, funky basslines and synths. Apple Music goes further and calls it an “unabashed pop record.” Anyone looking for the most pop-forward Paramore album should start here, and the pop-punk tag is least useful for this era.
This Is Why (2023): alternative rock and post-punk
On This Is Why, the band moved back toward rock while keeping a varied palette. The official Paramore site calls it an alternative rock album. Apple Music describes its sound as post-punk, and in its album notes guitarist Taylor York is quoted saying the band was “really craving rock.” The Associated Press points to “The News” as the song that best shows the post-punk side, and describes the album overall as angrier, pricklier and funkier than a simple genre label would suggest.
Rank #4
Those descriptions do not contradict each other. Post-punk describes the album’s texture and edge; alternative rock describes the band’s broader home. Neither replaces the other, and neither is a complete account of the group.

The alternative rock tag works as the umbrella for the whole career. It is the description the band itself uses on its official site for its most recent album, and it is broad enough to hold the punk-leaning early records, the pop turn of After Laughter and the more rock-focused work that followed.

It is worth being clear about what this umbrella is. It is an editorial synthesis drawn from the official site, retrospective coverage and reviews. It is not a formal genre declaration issued by the band as a single rule for its catalogue.
Is Paramore pop-punk?
Partly. The band’s early records and its public image were built on pop-punk, so the label is accurate for that stage. It is less accurate for After Laughter, which leans into pop and funk, and for This Is Why, which is better described as alternative rock with post-punk influences. Treat pop-punk as the starting point of the story rather than its final chapter.
What the evidence can and cannot settle
Genre is a descriptive judgement, not a measurable fact. There is no single chart position, sales figure or award count that tells you what Paramore sounds like, and none of those figures would answer the question. The answer rests on how critics, journalists and the band describe the music, and those descriptions are consistent on the broad point (rock-based, with pop-punk roots) while varying on the details of each album.
For that reason, the most reliable reading is album-level. A description of one record’s sound is more precise than a verdict on the whole band, and the band’s own comments about its influences are more useful than any single label applied across twenty years of music.

- Early Paramore: pop-punk, with a clear identity from that period.
- Self-titled album (2013): punk/pop with broader experimentation.
- After Laughter: pop and funk.
- This Is Why (2023): alternative rock with post-punk elements.
Use the umbrella phrase when you need one answer, and use the era list when you need to be precise.
