Mrs. Doubtfire is based on Anne Fine’s 1988 novel Alias Madame Doubtfire, according to the AFI Catalog. AFI also records that director Chris Columbus took part in rewrites that changed the film’s ending. Columbus directed the movie; Randi Mayem Singer and Leslie Dixon are credited as writers.
