On August 7, 2025, the Moon was waxing gibbous: more than half of its visible face was illuminated, and the lit portion was growing as the Moon approached full. The full Moon occurred on August 9, 2025. This is a historical date, not today’s current Moon phase.
Why August 7 was a waxing gibbous Moon
The U.S. Naval Observatory lists first quarter on August 1, 2025, at 12:41 UTC and full Moon on August 9 at 07:55 UTC. August 7 fell between those two phases, when the illuminated portion was increasing. NASA’s 2025 Sky Events Calendar independently gives the same dates and times. The USNO phase table reports its event times in Universal Time.
“Waxing” means the illuminated part was growing from night to night; “gibbous” describes a Moon that appears more than half lit but is not yet full. The phase name follows from the Moon’s position in its cycle, rather than from a particular viewing location.
What it looked like in the sky
On August 7, the Moon would have appeared mostly illuminated, with a smaller dark portion remaining before full. The precise appearance and when the Moon was above the horizon depended on the observer’s location and local time. An exact illumination percentage for August 7 is not established by the cited calendar information, so a more specific figure should not be inferred from a nearby date.

Why local date and viewing times can differ
Primary phase times are listed in UTC, while observers experience local time. Near a time-zone boundary, a phase event’s local calendar date can differ from the UTC date. Moonrise, moonset, and the Moon’s position in the sky also vary by location, so a single city’s schedule is not universal.
For context only, USNO’s one-day calculation for New York on August 8, 2025, gives 99% illumination and places the closest full Moon at 03:55 EDT on August 9. Those figures describe New York on August 8; they are not an August 7 reading or a global value. To check local viewing times, use the USNO one-day rise, set, and phase calculator and select the relevant place and date.
