News reported that she had disclosed a diagnosis of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). The diagnosis is based on Matthews’ public account, not independent confirmation in the reporting reviewed here, and the public record does not establish what caused her skin symptoms.
What illness does Mikayla Matthews have?
In March 2026, E! News reported that Matthews had shared a CIRS diagnosis in Instagram Stories. She described chronic illness as “all consuming” and wrote, “I’m genuinely just barely surviving.” She also said it had affected her ability to show up as the mother she wanted to be.
This is a diagnosis Matthews disclosed publicly, as reported by E! News—not a finding independently confirmed by a treating clinician or medical records in the coverage reviewed here. The report does not establish that CIRS caused her skin symptoms.
What skin symptoms has Matthews described?
Matthews has discussed several skin and health problems over time, but her accounts do not identify one confirmed cause for all of them. In September 2024, she described red splotches, pain, and continued testing. She said the symptoms affected walking, childcare, filming, confidence, and her quality of life.
#1 Best Overall
In a September 2024 interview with Yahoo Life, Matthews said her problems had included eczema, molluscum contagiosum, and thrush, alongside infections and other health issues while filming the first season of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Those are conditions she discussed in that interview; they should not be treated as a diagnosis explaining her later rashes or chronic illness.
How her public account changed over time
| Date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| September 2024 | In an interview published September 9, Us Weekly quoted Matthews saying, “Haven’t found any answers yet.” She described further testing and a recent biopsy. Us Weekly | At that time, she publicly described symptoms and ongoing investigation, without an answer. |
| September 2024 | Matthews discussed eczema and other conditions, infections, concern about breast implant illness, and implant removal during filming of season one. She also said much of her chronic-illness experience did not make it into the show. Yahoo Life | These are attributed interview statements. They do not prove that implants caused her symptoms or that removal treated them. |
| January 28, 2026 | The Looker reported that Matthews said she had been tested for 90 allergens and had mild allergies to several items, including eggs, grasses, and some animals. She planned to try avoiding milk and eggs to see whether that helped recent hives or rash-like reactions. The Looker | The proposed food avoidance was an experiment, not a confirmed trigger or successful treatment. The story reported that her doctor was not optimistic it would explain the issue. |
| March 2026 | E! News reported that Matthews disclosed a CIRS diagnosis in Instagram Stories. E! News | This is the latest diagnosis disclosure in the reporting covered here; it is not independent verification of the diagnosis or a demonstrated cause of her skin symptoms. |
What the reporting says about the show
Matthews said in a 2024 interview that much of her chronic-illness experience was left out of season one. That is her account of the edit, not evidence that the series documented a specific medical cause.
