Michael Richards’s life before Seinfeld included Army service as a medic, theater training funded by the GI Bill, and years of film and television work. But the David Letterman appearance associated with this story took place in November 2006, long after the sitcom began. Richards joined by satellite to apologize for his outburst at a Los Angeles comedy club; it was not a pre-Seinfeld interview.
What Michael Richards was doing before Seinfeld
In a 1993 Los Angeles Times profile, Richards described a childhood shaped by imagination and performance. An only child raised by a single mother, he recalled being humorous at school and getting into trouble, then doing better after changing schools. “I drove my teachers nuts,” he said. He became involved in plays, placed fourth in a California Forensic League competition, and graduated with honors. During summers, he worked as a hospital orderly and on an ambulance.
Richards later looked back on that early impulse toward physical performance in a 2024 Forbes interview about his memoir, Entrances and Exits. “I didn’t start out studying comedy. I was an actor doing plays. But I could do comedy,” he said. Forbes described the book as drawing on roughly four decades of his journals and covering his childhood and path into acting; those memoir-based reflections are Richards’s retrospective account.
Army service and theater education
Richards told the Los Angeles Times that he served in the Army, trained as a medic, and was asked by a commanding officer to stage plays for servicemen after the officer noticed his theatrical ability. After leaving the Army, he used the GI Bill to attend the California Institute of the Arts, where he earned a theater degree.

His acting work before the sitcom
Before Seinfeld, Richards had already appeared in films including Transylvania 6-5000, Young Doctors in Love, and UHF. His television credits included St. Elsewhere, Miami Vice, Cheers, and Night Court. The 1993 profile says Seinfeld came along in 1989.
In that same interview, Richards explained his approach to playing Kramer: “I don’t play Kramer. He plays me.” The line reflects how he described the character and his performance at the time, rather than a claim that the role was simply an unaltered version of himself.

What happened on David Letterman in 2006
The Letterman interview was not conducted before Seinfeld. On November 20, 2006, Richards appeared by satellite from Los Angeles on Late Show with David Letterman, with Jerry Seinfeld in the studio. Seinfeld said he had asked Richards to appear. The appearance followed Richards’s outburst at a Los Angeles comedy club.
Richards said he had lost his temper after being heckled, expressed remorse, and apologized to people in the audience. That was his explanation during the broadcast, as recorded in CNN’s transcript; it should be understood as Richards’s own account of the incident, not a complete independent reconstruction of what happened.

How the two parts of the story fit together
Richards’s pre-Seinfeld story is a progression from school plays and performance to Army service, formal theater training, and professional acting. The Letterman appearance belongs to a separate, much later chapter: a public apology in 2006, after the success of the sitcom and following the comedy-club incident.
