His public comments point to faith as a source of reflection and connection; they do not establish a specific denomination or a complete account of his personal theology.
What does Matthew McConaughey believe?
In a September 19, 2025, interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, McConaughey was asked whether he communicates his religious beliefs and feelings to fellow actors. He answered: “No, I talk openly. And I’m also not out — I’m not out pursuing conversion.” The distinction matters: he describes openness about faith, not an effort to persuade others to adopt it. Read the CNN Amanpour transcript.

In that interview, he also said, “But religion, we, mankind has bastardized religion along the way.” The remark conveys his criticism of how religion can be distorted; it does not, by itself, specify a denomination or define a full theology.
How does he describe religion’s purpose?
In a 2020 interview with Hugh Hewitt about his memoir Greenlights, McConaughey connected religion with unity. He said: “That’s the unity we’re talking about. Now has religion sort of been bastardized on the way and that it becomes too generic of things? Yes. But the real root of religion is something I think we can use right now, whatever you believe.” Read the Hugh Hewitt Show transcript.

That is McConaughey’s own description of religion’s “real root,” not an independently verified account of the word’s history. His emphasis in the interview is on a unifying idea that he considers useful across differences in belief.

McConaughey’s 2020 memoir Greenlights contains life reflections and lessons, but it should not be read as a formal theological statement. His later book, Poems & Prayers, brings his reflections on faith more directly into view. A Guardian profile published September 20, 2025, characterizes the book as a portrait of his faith and its impact on everyday life; that is the profile’s framing, rather than a direct quotation from McConaughey.
