As quoted in that story, Riddle said: “I did see Shane McMahon, and the first thing he said to me, and he said it sarcastically, was, ‘Hey, nice hair.’… He said that to me, and I told him to go F himself and walked away. To be fair, he was being sarcastic when I told him to go F off. But, you know, in the world of pro wrestling, you never know. He might’ve taken that seriously – Matt Riddle”
The story presents this as Riddle’s account, not as a verified transcript. The interview recording or a primary transcript is not independently established here, so the exchange should be attributed to Riddle as reported by the article.

Why was the encounter described as awkward?
The word “awkward” is the report’s headline framing, not a verified description of the men’s relationship or emotional state. Riddle characterized McMahon’s hair comment as sarcastic and said his own profane response was sarcastic as well. He also acknowledged he could not know for certain whether McMahon interpreted the retort seriously.
