Annette Roque’s only reported response to the allegation against her ex-husband, Matt Lauer, was that her priority was their children and that she would make no further statements. Her lawyer relayed the message in October 2019; it did not say whether Roque believed or disputed the allegation.
What did Annette Roque say?
Roque’s lawyer, John M. Teitler, responded to a press inquiry by telling People on October 9, 2019, that Roque’s priority and only concern was the couple’s children. He added: “Our client will make no further statements.” Us Weekly reported the statement the following day.
The message came after the couple’s divorce had been finalized, according to that October 2019 report. It was a brief statement about Roque’s priorities and her decision not to comment further—not an endorsement, denial, or judgment of the allegation.
What was Brooke Nevils’s allegation, and how did Lauer respond?
Former NBC employee Brooke Nevils alleged that Lauer raped her during an encounter at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The allegation was described in coverage of Ronan Farrow’s forthcoming book, Catch and Kill. The Los Angeles Times reported on October 9, 2019, that Lauer denied the allegation and characterized the encounter as mutual and consensual. In his words, “Each act was mutual and completely consensual.” That is Lauer’s account, not an independently established finding.

Nevils’s account and Lauer’s response conflict. The cited coverage does not establish a legal finding resolving the allegation, so it should be described as an allegation rather than an adjudicated fact.

In a February 13, 2026, article about Nevils’s memoir, Unspeakable Things, Hillary Kelly revisited Nevils’s expanded account and noted that Lauer continued to deny wrongdoing. Kelly quoted Nevils writing: “My purpose here is not to demand that you believe my side of the story without question, but instead to ask that you question all sides of your own beliefs about sexual harassment and assault.” The Atlantic’s retrospective adds later context to the disputed accounts; it does not alter what Roque said in 2019.
