Speaking with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the Dinner’s on Me podcast, he described the experience as “kind of unfair.”
What Bomer said about the media coverage
Bomer recalled a period when outlets, including Perez Hilton, talked about his personal life before he had an opportunity to speak about it himself. “It was that time when folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance to,” he said in the conversation with Ferguson. The podcast transcript records his account.

He said the delay was not because he did not want to speak publicly: “I didn’t even have an opportunity to.” Bomer framed the unfairness around who had the ability to shape the story. “No media outlet was ever going like, hey, I just didn’t have a career that warranted that,” he said. “And so it felt kind of unfair to me that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time.”
That is Bomer’s description of his experience and his judgment about it. His comments do not establish that any particular outlet caused a specific career outcome.

How his 2012 speech fits into the account
Bomer’s public acknowledgment of his family came at the 2012 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, separate from the earlier media discussion he described. Reporting by The Independent and Out says he thanked his family in his speech. Out reports that he said he did not want his husband and children to feel they were a shameful secret.

Coverage of Bomer’s remarks situates the media attention amid his rising profile through White Collar and Magic Mike. Them reports that Bomer said he had been honest with people he worked with, while also describing outlets discussing his personal life before he could tell his story publicly. The account centers on the difference between being open with colleagues and having the chance to speak publicly on his own terms.
