Martha Stewart said Ryan Reynolds is “not so funny in real life” and “very serious.” Reynolds answered with a joke about trying to disagree with her in person—and Stewart closing the gap after a mile. The exchange was a playful public back-and-forth, not evidence of a feud.
What Martha Stewart said about Ryan Reynolds
Stewart made the remarks while appearing on Bilt Rewards’ Rent Free, a game show in which she guessed which celebrities respondents had named as fun to spend time with. She wondered whether Reynolds had made the list because he covers his face in his movies, then said: “He’s not so funny in real life. No, he’s not so funny. He’s very serious.” E! News reported the exchange, as did The Independent.
Stewart later put the distinction more bluntly: Reynolds could act funny, she said, but “isn’t funny.” She also joked that she might get in trouble for saying it because he was her neighbor.
How Ryan Reynolds responded
Reynolds replied on X: “I’d disagree with her. But I tried that once. The woman is unexpectedly spry. She really closed the gap after a mile or so.” The joke turns Stewart’s neighbor comment into a mock chase: he suggests he once tried to disagree with her in person, only for her to catch up.

Reports place the response on November 1 or November 2, 2024, so the exact day is not consistent across coverage. Yahoo’s People-syndicated report and The Independent covered the reply. The quoted wording is reported by those outlets; the original X post was not directly verified here.
Are Stewart and Reynolds really neighbors?
Coverage describes Stewart and Reynolds as neighbors in the Bedford, New York, area. That detail gives the “closed the gap” punchline its setting, but it does not establish how close the two are or whether they have a private disagreement. Nothing in the reported exchange warrants treating it as a serious feud.

Was Stewart’s appearance promoting something?
E! reported that Stewart’s Rent Free appearance was promoting Martha: The Cookbook: 100 Favorite Recipes, with Lessons and Stories from My Kitchen. That explains the context of the appearance; it does not change the substance of her comments about Reynolds.
