Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s public comments about Bill Cosby were not a simple defense or repudiation. Warner described Cosby as a friend and mentor, said it was painful to hear women discuss sexual assault, and later said he could not defend Cosby. He also objected to The Cosby Show being pulled from reruns and criticized what he viewed as uneven media treatment. The principal documented comments located span interviews from 2013 to 2016; they do not establish an exhaustive record of every remark Warner made.
What did Malcolm-Jamal Warner say about Bill Cosby?
Warner’s comments shifted with the setting and the question. In a 2013 oral history, he recalled Cosby’s approach to comedy and the show’s portrayal of Black family life. During the public allegations in 2015, Warner spoke about Cosby as a mentor and friend while acknowledging the pain of hearing women talk about sexual assault. In 2016, he said he could not defend Cosby, while objecting to the removal of the show from reruns and to what he considered unbalanced coverage.
Warner played Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which ran from 1984 to 1992 for 197 episodes, according to the Associated Press’s 2025 obituary. The AP also reported that Warner received a 1986 Emmy nomination for supporting actor in a comedy.
2013: Warner recalled Cosby’s approach to comedy
In an oral-history interview conducted by Nancy Harrington in North Hollywood on July 3, 2013, Warner discussed working with Cosby, the relationship between Theo and Cliff, the show’s production and legacy, and its representation of Black life. The Television Academy archive describes the interview as three and a half hours long.

Warner said: “The Cosby Show was the first time on television you saw a Black family where the humor was not predicated upon how hard it is to be Black in America, or Black affectations and Black slang. Bill Cosby said the humor is in the truth. When you play the truth of the moment you’ll find the humor. That way you can make anything funny.” This is Warner’s recollection of the show and Cosby’s creative approach, not an independent finding about the history of television.
January 2015: he called Cosby a mentor and friend
As allegations against Cosby were being discussed publicly, Warner spoke to Billboard in January 2015. The Los Angeles Times quoted those remarks in its 2025 retrospective. Warner said: “He’s one of my mentors, and he’s been very influential and played a big role in my life as a friend and mentor.”

He also said: “Just as it’s painful to hear any woman talk about sexual assault, whether true or not, it’s just as painful to watch my friend and mentor go through this.” The phrase “whether true or not” is part of Warner’s statement and matters to its meaning: he described pain at hearing allegations and at watching someone close to him face them, without resolving their truth in that comment.
April 2015: he discussed the show’s success and Cosby’s touring
In a separate interview with The Washington Post, published April 7, 2015, Warner discussed his career, music and The Cosby Show. He said, “it was still Mr. Cosby’s show. It was his success.” On residuals, he called them “a nice padding” but added, “it’s not like you can live off it.”

Asked why Cosby was still touring, Warner replied: “Touring is what the guy does. It’s kind of like, if Michael Jordan could still play basketball, do you think he still would?” The remarks appeared in a broad career interview and should not be mistaken for Warner’s direct response to the allegations.

In an interview with The Real, reported by CBS News on March 7, 2016, Warner objected to The Cosby Show being removed from network lineups. He said the decision personally affected him: “Because the show was taken off the air, it’s literally taking money out of my pocket.”

Warner also argued that media treatment was “unbalanced,” comparing coverage of Cosby with the treatment of Woody Allen, Roman Polanski and Stephen Collins. Those comparisons were Warner’s judgment; they do not establish that the cases or their treatment were equivalent.
His clearest qualification was: “They were trying to take Mr. Cosby’s star off the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And I am in no position to defend him because I can’t. But nor will I throw him under the bus.” That statement captures the tension in his public position: Warner declined to defend Cosby, but resisted what he saw as a wholesale rejection of his former mentor and of the show.

- Response to allegations: He acknowledged the pain of hearing women discuss sexual assault, retaining the qualifier “whether true or not,” and in 2016 said he could not defend Cosby.
- Show and media coverage: He objected to reruns being pulled and criticized what he regarded as uneven coverage. These were his views, not proof of an independently established equivalence among cases.
- Different interview contexts: His comments about Cosby’s touring, residuals and the show’s success came in a separate career interview, while his account of the show’s comedy came in a 2013 oral history.
