Regal Cinema is special as an early landmark of Bombay’s Art Deco era. Opened in 1933, it paired a modern cinema design with details shaped by its Wellington Fountain setting and a remarkably ambitious set of original amenities. Its story also belongs to Mumbai’s wider Indo-Deco heritage, recognized as part of the city’s UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles.
When did Regal Cinema open, and who designed it?
Regal was inaugurated on 14 October 1933 with the Laurel and Hardy comedy The Devil’s Brother, according to Art Deco Mumbai’s feature on the cinema. That account describes it as Bombay’s first Art Deco cinema, a modernist presence among the Victorian Gothic and Indo-Saracenic buildings around it.
Commissioned by Framji Sidhwa and K. A. Kooka, the building was designed by Charles Frederick Stevens. Czechoslovakian artist Karl Schara created its original interiors. The distinction matters: Stevens shaped the architecture, while Schara supplied many of the decorative features that gave the cinema its individual character.
How did Regal’s design respond to its setting?
Regal was built for the corner at Wellington Fountain circle, and its design took cues from the surrounding skyline of gables, turrets, and domes. Rather than simply importing a new style into the neighborhood, the cinema’s design connected its Art Deco identity to the varied forms already defining the streetscape.
#1 Best Overall
- Maps for grades 5 and up
- Covers topics such as the discovery of America, Spanish conquistadors, the New England colonies, wars and conflicts, westward expansion, slavery, and transportation
- Maps are designed to be easily reproduced, projected, or scanned
- Classroom activities and brief explanations of historical events are included
- Includes answer keys
That contrast helps explain the building’s appeal: it marked a new architectural moment while remaining attentive to its place in the city. The cinema’s setting made it part of a larger urban story, not just a standalone entertainment venue.
What made the original cinema feel modern?
Art Deco Mumbai reports that Regal’s original facilities included a cluster of features associated with comfort, access, and technical innovation for the period:
- Full air conditioning and underground parking.
- An elevator, concealed lighting, and multiple entrances serving balcony and box seating.
- Seats imported from London.
- A special telephone attached to seats so hearing-impaired patrons could follow dialogue.
The source also reports that the cinema could accommodate 1,200 patrons at once. That is a historical capacity figure attributed to Art Deco Mumbai, whose reviewed page does not state a publication year; it should not be read as Regal’s current capacity. These are descriptions of the original venue, not confirmation that the facilities remain in place or operate today.
What was distinctive about Regal’s interiors?
Schara’s interior scheme used bold sunray and cubist motifs in pale orange and jade green. Carved masks representing Tragedy and Comedy stood on either side of the screen, turning a familiar theatrical motif into a prominent part of the room’s design.

Art Deco Mumbai interprets it as a reference to the cinema’s early Hollywood associations. The same account says renovations in 1953 obliterated many original embellishments, so the documented interior is not a guarantee of what survives in the building today.
How does Regal fit into Mumbai’s Indo-Deco heritage?
UNESCO’s description of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai places cinemas and apartment buildings within a distinctive local style: “Mumbai’s Art Deco buildings of iconic cinema halls and apartment buildings blended Indian design with Art Deco imagery and created a unique style that became known as Indo-Deco.”
Rank #4
The ensemble tells a broader story of the city’s growth. Victorian Gothic public buildings developed around the Oval Maidan in the nineteenth century; Art Deco residential, commercial, and entertainment buildings followed in connection with the early twentieth-century Backbay reclamation. Regal’s importance comes partly from its place in this shift toward modern urban architecture and popular entertainment.
In 2018, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the Mumbai ensembles under criteria (ii) and (iv). UNESCO describes them as evidence of exchanges between European and Indian values and of changes in architectural styles, construction, and urban planning. The designation covers the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco areas as an ensemble; it does not make Regal Cinema, by itself, a UNESCO World Heritage property.

What can be said about Regal today?
The historical accounts establish Regal’s design, original features, and heritage context, but do not establish its present operating status, access arrangements, showtimes, ticket prices, or current conservation condition. Those details should be confirmed from up-to-date venue information before planning a visit; the history alone is not evidence that the cinema is currently screening films or open for interior visits.
