Some opponents recast it as a threat involving Islam, immigration, communism, or national decline. That rhetoric can be read as revealing anxieties about identity and political change—but it does not establish what any individual privately felt or what all MAGA voters believe.
How a local election became a national online symbol
Mamdani won a high-turnout race after centering his campaign on affordability. The Associated Press reported that more than two million New Yorkers voted—the largest turnout in a mayoral election in more than 50 years, according to the city Board of Elections—and that Mamdani described his win as a mandate for change. The Associated Press’s election report gives the result its local context.
Online, however, reactions often made the result stand for a broader contest over the direction of American politics. The Washington Post documented both celebration and alarm, including the phrase “WOKE IS BACK” and content treating the win as significant for national Democrats. Its account of the creator response shows how the election became shareable political content for supporters and opponents alike.
How Mamdani’s campaign made policy travel online
The campaign’s digital strategy began well before the general election. The Washington Post described trending videos and collaborations with creators across the political spectrum as part of Mamdani’s underdog campaign, helping him reach young New Yorkers and voters seeking a more compelling political message. A proposal for city-owned grocery stores offers an example of policy becoming meme-friendly: conservative activist Christopher Rufo criticized the idea while acknowledging its effectiveness as political communication. The two sides’ online tactics had different purposes. The campaign packaged a candidate and proposals into memorable, widely shareable content; some opponents used shorthand to portray the candidate as a threat. The distinction matters: virality can make a policy visible, while a meme that substitutes labels for policy can narrow what audiences notice.
What the backlash memes and rhetoric emphasized
Religion and immigration
WIRED reported that Republican lawmakers, right-wing influencers, far-right extremists, and conspiracy theorists responded with anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Some described the city as having “fallen” or portrayed the result as a warning about the country’s future. These were claims and characterizations by the people covered—not evidence that New York had fallen or that a particular national outcome would follow. Communist imagery and fears of political change
The Guardian described the New York Post’s November 5 cover, “The Red Apple,” which depicted Mamdani in a red suit holding a hammer and sickle beneath the headline “On your Marx, get set, Zo!” The imagery cast the mayoral result through a communist frame, compressing a democratic-socialist candidate and a local election into a familiar symbol of ideological threat. It is an example of framing, not proof that the cover’s political implication was accurate. The Guardian’s coverage describes the cover and allied reaction.
WIRED also reported predictions of political violence or economic collapse. Those predictions should be understood as alarmist rhetoric, not established consequences of the election. Taken together, the examples shifted attention from a city-level affordability platform toward questions of who belongs, what political ideas are acceptable, and whether familiar social or economic arrangements are under threat.

What the online-hate counts do—and do not—show
Two organizations examined hostile online content, but their findings measure different things and cannot be treated as a poll of voters or a census of social media.

The timing is important: Equality Labs announced its report on November 3, 2025, before the general-election result. Its sample traces hostility during the campaign, rather than measuring reactions caused by the November 4 victory. The Washington Post’s account of the Center for the Study of Organized Hate findings covers a period ending October 31, also before the vote.

Do the memes reveal insecurity?
“Insecurity” is an interpretation of the documented rhetoric, not a measurable diagnosis of the people who posted it. The evidence supports a narrower argument: some reactions treated a local election as a threat to national identity and political order. Anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant attacks made Mamdani’s identity and background central; red-baiting cast his democratic-socialist politics as a danger to the country. Those choices of frame suggest anxieties about cultural and economic change, but they cannot tell us the private motives of individual posters or justify generalizing about every conservative, Republican, or MAGA voter.
The more revealing contrast is between political substance and symbolic shorthand. Mamdani’s campaign used online culture to make proposals and a candidate memorable; hostile posts and imagery often replaced policy debate with labels tied to religion, immigration, extremism, or decline. As NYU journalism professor Adam Penenberg told the Washington Post, “The risk is that this relentless caricaturing overshadows the substance, making it harder for people to see what his administration is actually doing.”

Why the framing matters beyond the memes
Memes can introduce people to an idea, but they can also turn a complicated election into a simple story of belonging and threat. When a candidate’s religion or immigrant background becomes the main subject of the response, the affordability agenda that helped define the campaign can disappear from view. The available reporting documents that tension; it does not establish how much any single post changed voters’ opinions or what the new administration would do.
