The Guardian reported her Instagram post on November 8, 2024, as: “Trying to get my head around why a convicted felon, rapist, bigot was chosen to lead our country because he’s good for the economy?”
What was Madonna reacting to?
Madonna’s reported post came in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s 2024 election victory. Its full wording matters: she framed the choice as a question about whether voters selected him because they thought he was good for the economy. The Guardian reported the sentence as an Instagram post; the original story was not independently available in the sources consulted, so the quotation is attributed here to that report.

What do the legal terms refer to?
The descriptors in the post do not all have the same status. “Convicted felon” refers to a criminal conviction in New York; “rapist” was Madonna’s characterization, while the related court finding in the E. Jean Carroll case was civil liability for sexual abuse and defamation.
The New York criminal conviction
On May 30, 2024, a New York County jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. The court record establishes that conviction and offense; it was not a rape conviction. Read the New York court decision.

The Carroll civil case
A civil jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll and defaming her. That was a civil finding, not a criminal conviction for rape. The distinction matters when describing the case: Madonna used the word “rapist” in her political criticism, but it should not be presented as a criminal verdict. Read the court filing.
“Bigot” as political characterization
“Bigot” was Madonna’s own characterization in the reported post. The cited sources do not identify it as a judicial or formal legal finding.

The Guardian reported that Madonna later responded to criticism by saying: “I do not promote violence and it’s important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety rather than one phrase.” This was her reported response to backlash, separate from the election post.
