Macaulay Culkin said in March 2025 that he had not spoken to his father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin, for about 30 years. He also described his father as estranged from his children and grandchildren—but in a later interview, Culkin clarified that his siblings can make their own choices about having a relationship with Kit. The reports give two different grandchild counts, and neither explains the discrepancy.
What Macaulay Culkin said about his father and family
On the March 31, 2025 episode of Kate and Oliver Hudson’s podcast Sibling Revelry, Culkin said, “I haven’t spoken to him in about 30-something years.” The Independent quoted him in its April 2, 2025 report (The Independent).
In that conversation, Culkin said his father had seven children and four grandchildren, adding that “none of them want anything to do with him.” That was Culkin’s description of the family’s relationships at the time, not confirmation of each relative’s position. In a November 2025 interview, he made clear that his siblings could choose for themselves whether to have a relationship with Kit.
Why the reported grandchild count differs

Culkin said his siblings can decide for themselves
In the November 2025 interview, Culkin said, “Listen, if my siblings want to have their relationship with him, they can. Whatever.” He also said he did not want his father’s “sins” passed on to his own children. Us Weekly reported the interview on November 28, 2025, summarizing an interview published by Deadline two days earlier (Us Weekly).
That later statement matters when interpreting his March remarks: Culkin was speaking about his own estrangement and his view of the family, not claiming to make the choice for every sibling. The reporting does not establish the current relationship each sibling has with Kit.
Family history behind the estrangement
According to The Independent’s account, Kit and Patricia Brentrup had six children together: Shane, Dakota, Macaulay, Kieran, Quinn, Christian, and Rory. Kit also had a daughter, Jennifer Adamson, with a former partner. The report says Dakota died in 2008 and Adamson in 2000.
The Independent also reports that Macaulay petitioned at age 15 to remove his parents as his legal guardians, and that a family accountant managed his trust until he turned 18. Brentrup later won custody of the children in 1997, according to the same account. These are reported background details; the underlying court record was not reviewed in the reporting summarized here.

Culkin has described Kit as abusive and recounted alleged physical and emotional mistreatment. The Independent reported that Culkin discussed his account on the 2018 WTF with Marc Maron podcast. Us Weekly reports that Kit denied abuse allegations in court documents from the custody dispute, and that his late partner Jeanette Krylowski also denied the claims. The reports describe Krylowski’s view that Brentrup had turned the children against Kit.
These are attributed accounts and denials, not an adjudicated conclusion established by the reporting. The court filings and the original 2001 interview were not directly reviewed for these accounts.
