Tomlinson wrote that he first met Payne when Tomlinson was 18 and Payne was 16. He described Payne as the brother he had long wanted and recalled the pair talking about working together in the studio again. As reported by ABC News and the Los Angeles Times, Tomlinson wrote: “I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye.”

The Los Angeles Times also reported Tomlinson’s line: “I got the chance to see the kind of brother I’d longed all my life for.” He praised Payne’s voice and songwriting, and expressed regret that they would not get to share a stage again.

Tomlinson said he would be there for Bear as an uncle and would tell him stories about his father. The promise extended his tribute beyond his memories of Payne to the support he intended to give Payne’s son.

How did the tribute relate to One Direction’s joint statement?
The surviving members of One Direction—Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles—also issued a joint statement. It said, “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” and the four members said they needed time to grieve. The Associated Press reported the statement.
The two messages had different scopes: the band’s statement expressed collective grief, while Tomlinson’s individual tribute recalled his personal bond with Payne, their musical connection and his commitment to Bear.
