Lizzo was not announcing that she was leaving music. After her March 29, 2024 Instagram post ended with “I QUIT,” she clarified on April 2 that she meant she was quitting giving negative energy attention—not making music or connecting with people.
What did Lizzo mean by “I quit”?
In a follow-up Instagram video on April 2, Lizzo explained: “When I say I quit, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention.” She added that she was not quitting “the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people.” The Guardian quoted her video in its April 2 report: Lizzo says she is not quitting music after ‘I quit’ post.
What did her original post say?
On March 29, 2024, Lizzo posted that she was tired of being dragged by people in her life and on the internet. As quoted by Abené Clayton in The Guardian, she wrote: “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.” Later, she described her character being picked apart by people who did not know her and wrote, “I didn’t sign up for this shit.” The post ended with “I QUIT.”
The wording led some readers to think she was leaving entertainment. That was an initial interpretation of the post, not her settled intention; her April 2 explanation made clear she was not quitting music. Clayton’s March 29 report, updated March 30, recounts the post: Lizzo says she is tired of being dragged by everyone and declares ‘I quit’.

Where the March 17 post fits
The Guardian’s March 29 report noted that Lizzo had posted on March 17 that she was writing new music, was excited for fans to hear it, and asked them for more time. That earlier post provides chronology, but it does not establish why she wrote the March 29 message.
