Gangs of Wasseypur drew on coal-mafia conflicts in Dhanbad, but the film is not established as a literal account of a proven feud between Suryadeo Singh’s family and Faheem Khan’s. A 2021 Scroll book excerpt by Rajesh Singh names real-life figures said to have inspired two characters, while also emphasizing that a direct Singh–Khan connection remains unestablished and that Wasseypur residents disputed the film’s portrayal of their town.

What is the reported connection?

Rajesh Singh’s January 6, 2021 Scroll excerpt from Baahubalis of Indian Politics: From Ballot to Bullet links the 2012 film and its sequel to conflicts around coal mining in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It describes Suryadeo Singh as a politician and major coal-mafia figure in the region, and says the films drew on conflicts involving him and others.

The excerpt names Sabir Alam and Faheem Khan as real-life bases for two important film characters. That is a claim about inspiration, not proof that the movie reproduces a documented feud between the Singh and Khan families.

What does the excerpt say about Suryadeo Singh?

In Rajesh Singh’s account, Suryadeo Singh came to Dhanbad from Ballia, began as a loader, and connected with coal-union leader BP Sinha before forming his own union. The excerpt says Singh gained influence amid disputes over coal-mining contracts, including a clash over the Bhuridih mines in 1977. It describes his power as extending across Dhanbad, with Jharia as the principal battleground.

This regional context matters: the excerpt places Singh’s coal-world influence in Dhanbad and identifies Jharia as a key site. It does not make Wasseypur synonymous with that coal-mafia terrain.

Was Suryadeo Singh connected to Faheem Khan?

The excerpt says no connection between Suryadeo Singh and Faheem Khan has been established as fact. It recounts a rumor that Singh backed Sabir Alam because Singh and Khan did not get along, but does not verify the alleged support or the supposed reason for it. The rumor should not be treated as a confirmed alliance or as evidence of a proven family feud.

Why did Wasseypur residents object to the film?

Rajesh Singh’s excerpt reports that residents objected to the film’s focus on their township and to its tagline, “In Wasseypur, crime is inherited.” One unnamed resident was quoted as saying the coal mafia depicted in the film had no presence in Wasseypur. The excerpt also says residents considered the family conflict shown in the film imaginary.

The account distinguishes the township from the larger Dhanbad coal-mafia setting: it says major coal-mafia figures were based outside Wasseypur, while a scrap-mafia presence existed in the township. These are reported local views in the excerpt, not independently established findings.

Who might have inspired the character Ramadhir?

The excerpt reports an interpretation that Ramadhir Singh, Suryadeo Singh’s brother, inspired the character Ramadhir Singh in the film. It does not establish that as the filmmakers’ confirmed intention. It says the director and writer visited Singh Mansion to clear the air, but supplies no direct statement from either filmmaker in the excerpt.

What source is this account based on?

The source is an edited excerpt from Rajesh Singh’s book Baahubalis of Indian Politics: From Ballot to Bullet, published by Rupa Publications and carried by Scroll on January 6, 2021. The claims above describe what that excerpt reports; its account is not, by itself, independent confirmation of the historical or film-production details.
