At his September 5, 2010 wedding reception, Lin-Manuel Miranda surprised his wife, Vanessa Nadal, with a group performance of “To Life! (L’Chaim!)” from Fiddler on the Roof. Wedding-party members, friends, family and Broadway collaborators joined in.
What song did Lin-Manuel Miranda sing?
The tribute was “To Life! (L’Chaim!),” the celebratory song from Fiddler on the Roof. BroadwayWorld identified the song in its September 9, 2010 report, and a 2016 retrospective by JTA also described the performance as a surprise serenade for Nadal.
How the wedding-reception surprise came together
The performance was staged by wedding guests at the reception. BroadwayWorld reported that Miranda brought together relatives, in-laws, bridesmaids, groomsmen and friends from In the Heights. CBS New York’s September 15, 2010 account likewise described guests performing after a toast.
Miranda’s video description, reproduced in BroadwayWorld’s report, said the group had rehearsed secretly for a month. That is his account of the preparation, rather than an independently established rehearsal schedule. He wrote: “My surprise for my wife Vanessa on our wedding day. All of Vanessa’s close friends and family rehearsed for a month in secret, leading up to the reception. What we lack in polish, we hopefully Make Up For in joy and love. In any event, everyone in this video has one thing in common: We’d do anything to show Vanessa how much we love her.”
