The phrase “It was a horrible thing to happen,” often attached to the topic, is less firmly sourced: a later article attributes it to a 2024 People interview, but the original interview and the surrounding exchange are not available in the cited reporting.
What did Liam Neeson say about Natasha Richardson’s accident?
In Tom Junod’s 2011 Esquire interview, Neeson described the emotional difficulty of speaking about his wife’s death. When Junod raised the subject, Neeson said: “I can’t. It’s … I’m too vulnerable, Tom. I can’t go there.” The interview also records Neeson reflecting on returning to work after the funeral: “I just think I was still in a bit of shock,” he said, describing work as a way of “running away.” Read the Esquire interview.
Those remarks are directly recorded in the interview. They convey Neeson’s reluctance to revisit the loss, rather than offering a detailed account of the accident or assigning responsibility for it.
What is the source of the “horrible” wording?
A 2025 article from The New York Today attributes the sentence “It was a horrible thing to happen” to Neeson in a 2024 People interview. The original People interview is not available in the cited coverage, so its exact publication date and the context of the exchange cannot be confirmed here. The wording should therefore be understood as a secondary attribution, not as a verified quotation from the primary interview. Read The New York Today’s account.

What happened to Natasha Richardson while skiing?
Richardson fell during a ski lesson at Mont Tremblant in Quebec on March 16, 2009. Contemporary reporting said she initially appeared well, had no obvious external injury, and walked back to her room; she later developed a headache. The Guardian also reported at the time that she was not wearing a helmet. That detail does not establish that a helmet would have prevented her death. Read The Guardian’s March 2009 report.
CNN’s April 9, 2009 report described her later deterioration, transfer to a Montreal trauma centre, and flight to New York. Its account discussed an epidural hematoma and the time involved in reaching trauma care, but it did not establish that a different transport route would have changed the outcome. CNN explicitly said that whether a faster helicopter transfer could have saved her could not be answered. Its time estimates were specific to its reconstruction of this 2009 incident, not general medical guidance. Read CNN’s April 9, 2009 transcript.

- Neeson’s own reflections: The 2011 Esquire interview directly records his words about being too vulnerable to discuss the death and being in shock afterward.
- The accident timeline: The Guardian and CNN provide contemporaneous and retrospective reporting on the fall and subsequent events; their accounts do not settle whether the outcome was preventable.
- The “horrible” sentence: The exact wording is attributed to a 2024 People interview by a later secondary article, but the original exchange is not established by that reporting.
