Strickland’s remarks appeared in a PEOPLE interview republished by Yahoo Entertainment on December 14, 2022, more than seven months after Judd died. He described Judd as having several therapists, low energy and increasing weakness. These details are attributed to Strickland’s recollection; they are not independent medical findings. His comments concern the difficult months before her death, rather than a witnessed description of her final moments.
What is known about the timeline
- April 30, 2022: Naomi Judd died at her Tennessee home at age 76. Her death came the day before she and daughter Wynonna were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
- May 12, 2022: Ashley Judd discussed her mother’s death in an interview with Good Morning America. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, she said the family wanted to disclose the manner of death themselves rather than leave it to speculation, and asked for privacy.
- August 12, 2022: The family petitioned to seal police reports and recordings, citing privacy and potential trauma.
- August 26, 2022: The Associated Press reported that the autopsy confirmed the cause of death. It also reported the family’s statement that Judd had been treated for PTSD and bipolar disorder.
- December 14, 2022: Strickland’s retrospective remarks about the preceding months were published.

What the public statements do—and do not—establish
The family’s statement about treatment for PTSD and bipolar disorder is not evidence that either condition caused Judd’s death. Strickland’s comments likewise communicate his recollection of a hard period, not a clinical account or an explanation of every circumstance surrounding her death.
The family’s request to keep investigative records private is part of why public accounts do not provide a basis to reconstruct private final moments. The AP reported on the petition in its August 12, 2022 coverage. Respecting that boundary means reporting what family members chose to share without adding speculation or assigning blame.
