The Black Pearl is a fictional pirate ship with a galleon-like appearance, but the available production sources do not identify it as one exact historical ship class. The full-size navigable vessel built for the films was a modern steel offshore supply boat dressed to look like the Pearl.
Was the Black Pearl a galleon?
“Galleon-like” is a useful description of the Black Pearl’s visual style: it has the tall, multi-masted silhouette and dramatic stern associated with familiar depictions of pirate ships. It is not, however, a confirmed historical classification. The production sources describe how the film vessel was built, but do not establish that the design is a historically faithful galleon—or definitively classify it as a frigate, East Indiaman, or another type.
Disney identifies the Black Pearl as Jack Sparrow’s ship in The Curse of the Black Pearl. That establishes its role in the story, not a real-world naval class.
What was the film ship actually built from?
The navigable Black Pearl associated with the second and third films was built around the hull of Sunset, a modern steel offshore supply boat. Production designer John Myhre described the construction this way: “Rick and his crew, plus the boat builders, constructed the ‘Black Pearl’ around the hull of a modern steel boat, and it was completely navigable.” The production notes identify the boat as Sunset and report that it had traveled more than 8,000 nautical miles before being converted for On Stranger Tides. That mileage belongs to the vessel before its later makeover; it is not a measure of the Pearl’s fictional voyages.

The same production notes for On Stranger Tides say the Sunset-based vessel was reused as the foundation for the Queen Anne’s Revenge. The notes describe that later conversion as substantially altering the ship, including a third deck that reached 55 feet above the waterline and a converted vessel 100 tons heavier than it had been as the Black Pearl. Those figures describe the Queen Anne’s Revenge makeover, not the Pearl’s original configuration.
Was the Black Pearl one real ship in every shot?
No single physical vessel supplied every image of the Black Pearl. The navigable Sunset-based ship was one production asset among hulls, set pieces, and models used to represent the vessel in different scenes.

- Rigging designer Courtney John Andersen estimated that production used eight hulls or hull parts, two large models, and ten mast set pieces. This is his count, not a published studio inventory; his portfolio does not state a publication date.
- The Walt Disney Archives documents a 23-foot-tall “bigature” Black Pearl model used for special-effects shots in the first three films. The model’s height is reported by the Archives in a 2018 article.
The bigature was a production effects model, not evidence that a consumer model kit is currently available.

Call the Black Pearl a fictional, galleon-like pirate ship. That captures the recognizable screen design while avoiding a claim the available evidence cannot support: that it belongs to one precise historical class. The navigable filming vessel is a separate question—it was a modern steel offshore supply boat, Sunset, adapted with period-inspired superstructure and rigging.
