Kay Kay Menon said Paanch taught him that a film can fail to reach audiences, and that a performance in an unreleased film may not lead to new work. In a January 2018 interview, he also described his role in Vodka Diaries and explained how he develops a character from a script.
What did Menon learn from Paanch?
In a January 15, 2018 interview with Scroll’s Archana Nathan, Menon recalled that working on Anurag Kashyap’s 2003 debut, Paanch, raised his expectations for his career. The film ran into problems with the censor board and then its producer; it remained unreleased at the time of the interview. Menon said the experience showed him that a film could go badly wrong and never reach cinemas: “I learnt that things can go completely haywire. A film may not even get released.”
He drew a practical career lesson from that experience: “That’s when I realised that only when your film is released can you expect work to come to you.” In his account, a performance in a film audiences cannot see may not help an actor secure further work. This was Menon’s reflection on his own experience, not a rule about every actor or production. The interview does not establish Paanch’s release or distribution status after 2018.
What did Menon say about Vodka Diaries?
At the time of the interview, Vodka Diaries was being promoted as a January 19, 2018 release. Menon played Assistant Commissioner of Police Ashwini Dixit in director Kushal Srivastava’s murder mystery. He described the film’s setting this way: “Vodka Diaries is the name of a club around which strange things begin to happen.”
Menon characterized the film as more than a whodunit, calling it a human story as well. He said he approached Dixit as an individual person rather than reducing him to his profession or rank: “I always tell people that I perform people, not roles.” These are Menon’s descriptions of the film and his approach to the character, not an independent assessment of the movie.
How does Menon prepare for a role?
Menon described repeatedly reading a script and working with it until an understanding of the character begins to take shape. As he put it: “I work with a script until all of a sudden, when you don’t expect it, a form of the character begins to emerge.”
He also emphasized consistency over isolated successes: “Today, I value an actor’s ability to perform consistently well.” Menon called himself an “impressionist actor,” describing a focus on the overall performance rather than dialogue alone.
