In a tribute posted days later, she vowed she would keep saying their names and honoring them. The brothers were due to be groomsmen at her wedding the next day.
Katie Gaudreau’s tribute to her brothers
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on September 3, 2024, that Katie’s first public post after her brothers’ deaths was a 13-photo Instagram slideshow. Its caption began, “To know these two was to love these two,” and described the brothers as inseparable: “The entire world knows there would never have been a John without Matty or Matty without John.”
Katie called them “The absolute best big brothers a little girl could have asked for.” She also wrote: “This will never be a goodbye post because I will never stop saying your names and honoring you both.” These are words from Katie’s caption as reproduced in the Inquirer’s report, not an official family statement. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s account reported that the tribute had more than 57,000 likes and 1,800 comments by Tuesday morning, September 3, 2024; those numbers describe the post at that point, not its current engagement.
Why the wedding was postponed
Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, died on August 29, 2024, after a car struck them while they were riding bicycles in New Jersey, according to ABC News Australia. Their deaths came the night before Katie and her fiancé, Devin Joyce, were scheduled to marry on August 30. Both brothers were expected to serve as groomsmen. The family postponed the ceremony, as confirmed in a memorial account from the Calgary Flames.
