In June 2023, People en Español reported that Karol G had reached a deal with Interscope Records for new music to be released under her Bichota Records imprint, with Interscope distributing it. The outlet attributed to Billboard the claim that Karol G would own her master recordings. The agreement itself was not made public in the sources reviewed, so the reported ownership claim should not be treated as a verified contract term.
What was reported about Karol G’s deal?
People en Español published its account on June 7, 2023, describing a partnership between Karol G, Bichota Records and Interscope Records. It reported that Bichota Records would be the imprint for new music and Interscope would distribute those releases. The article attributed the claim that Karol G would own her masters to Billboard reporting. People en Español’s June 7, 2023 report
Those are three distinct ideas: the imprint identifies the release, distribution describes Interscope’s role in getting the music to market, and ownership concerns rights in the sound recordings. The report does not make distribution evidence of ownership by itself.
What does it mean to own a master recording?
A master is the original sound recording. Owning a master means holding ownership of that recording; it is not, by itself, a statement about songwriting or music-publishing rights. People en Español gives a basic explanation of the term, but its discussion does not establish the scope or legal mechanics of Karol G’s reported deal. The distinction matters because a report that an artist owns masters does not answer which recordings are covered, for how long, in which territories, or whether any exceptions or reversion provisions apply. Those details are not established in the available account.
What is known about the reported deal’s value?
People en Español reported that a source who spoke to Billboard valued the deal at almost $100 million. That figure is attributed reporting, not a publicly disclosed contract value: the reviewed source does not say Karol G, Interscope or a public agreement confirmed it. What later confirmation does—and does not—show
In a February 4, 2024 Grammy announcement, Universal Music Group listed Karol G as an Interscope artist in connection with MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO. That official mention supports the existence of an Interscope artist relationship at that date. It does not confirm who legally owned the album’s master recordings or the terms of the 2023 arrangement. Universal Music Group’s February 4, 2024 Grammy announcement

The available sources do not include the agreement or a direct statement from the parties spelling out its ownership terms. They do not establish whether the reported masters claim applies to every new recording, its geographic or time limits, any exceptions, or whether and when rights could revert. The safest conclusion is therefore narrow: in 2023, People en Español reported a Bichota Records imprint and Interscope distribution arrangement and attributed the claim of master ownership to Billboard; the contract details remain unverified in these sources.
