She wrote that Emhoff had told her about it while they were dating and that it came up again during her vice-presidential vetting. Her account focused on the effect of renewed public attention on their family and on her telling Emhoff he needed to address the story.
What Harris said in 107 Days
In passages from the memoir reported by E! News, Harris wrote that Emhoff had told her about the affair while they were dating. She also said it was disclosed during the vetting process before he became vice president. Harris’s words, as quoted in the report, were: “Of course, I knew about this.”
When the affair returned to public attention in 2024, Harris wrote that she was troubled by the renewed scrutiny of the family. She said she hated that the children were reminded of a painful period, that their friends might discuss it again and that Kerstin Emhoff’s privacy would be invaded. Harris also wrote: “I told Doug that he would need to deal with it: I couldn’t look away from the job in front of me.”
How the story became public
The marriage and its end
CBS News reported that court records showed Kerstin Emhoff filed for divorce in 2009 and that the divorce appeared to be finalized in late 2010. The dates do not establish why the marriage ended or prove a single cause.

Emhoff’s 2024 acknowledgment
On August 3, 2024, after a British tabloid published an account of the affair, Doug Emhoff acknowledged that he had been unfaithful during his first marriage. In a statement reported by CBS News, he said: “During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.”
Kerstin Emhoff said the marriage had ended “for a variety of reasons, many years ago.” She also described Doug as a good father and friend and spoke positively about the blended family she, Doug and Harris had built.

What was reported about the circumstances
CBS News separately reported, citing unnamed sources, that Doug and Kerstin Emhoff were separated when the affair occurred. Those sources also disputed the tabloid’s description of the woman as a nanny: CBS reported that she taught at the children’s school but was not teaching either child at the time. These details are attributed to anonymous sources, not established here as uncontested facts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the timing matters
The public acknowledgment came in August 2024; Harris’s account in 107 Days was reported by E! News on September 23, 2025, the book’s publication date. The available coverage presents her remarks as a memoir account, not as a separate first-time interview. The distinction matters: Harris was describing what she knew and how she responded to the renewed attention, rather than revealing the affair to the public for the first time.
