What did Harris mean by saying women aren’t aspiring to be humble?
Harris replied: “I don’t think she understands that there are a whole lot of women out here who, one, are not aspiring to be humble, two, a whole lot of women out here who have a lot of love in their life, family in their life and children in their life.” The remark linked two ideas: women need not treat humility as an aspiration, and a person’s family life cannot be judged only by whether they have biological children.
Family by blood and by love
Harris described her own family in broader terms: “we have our family by blood, and then we have our family by love. Was Harris making a claim about what all women want?
No. Harris offered a conversational opinion about women and family, not a statistical finding. The interview coverage does not establish that women generally reject humility, nor does it measure women’s views about motherhood or family. Her words should be understood as a response to Sanders’s comment, not as evidence of a universal attitude.
