Kaitlan Collins said she called Donald Trump for his reaction after President Joe Biden announced he was leaving the 2024 presidential race. Without headphones, she took the call on speaker in an Uber while writing down his quotes—and the driver noticed the booming voice.
Why Collins called Trump
In an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins recounted calling Trump after Biden’s surprise withdrawal from the race. “We wanted to know, you know, what was Trump’s reaction to this major news that has totally changed the presidential race for him. So, I called Donald Trump,” she said in the CNN transcript of the segment. CNN’s August 13, 2024 transcript summarizes the story as an account of what happened in an Uber after Biden’s announcement.

What happened in the Uber
Collins said she did not have her headphones, so she put Trump on speaker while sitting in the back seat and taking down his quotes. His voice carried through the car. The driver turned around and looked between Collins and her phone, apparently trying to work out whose voice he was hearing. Collins described it this way: “The Uber driver – like, Trump’s voice is like booming through.”
She said she sprinted out of the Uber afterward. Later, she checked the app to make sure she had tipped the driver, joking that she did not know whether he had rated her one star or five.

What the clip verifies about Colbert’s reaction
The official Late Show YouTube clip, published August 13, 2024, is titled “When Biden Dropped Out, Kaitlan Collins’ First Call Was To Donald Trump.” Its description gives the Uber-call context and the driver’s surprise. Watch the official Late Show clip.
The transcript confirms Collins told the anecdote on Colbert’s show, but it does not establish whether Colbert laughed or “couldn’t keep a straight face.” That specific reaction is a visual claim, so it must be assessed from the video rather than inferred from the transcript.
