Spoiler warning: this article explains a plot reveal from “Collateral,” Season 2, Episode 9 of CBS’s Matlock.

The discovery changes Matty’s position in the Wellbrexa case. Julian now knows that Matty is really Madeline Kingston and has seen the evidence board linking people and evidence to the Wellbrexa cover-up. Her deception is no longer something he is guessing at. Matty and Olympia must now manage what Julian will do with that knowledge, and the sources do not settle how that will play out.

What Julian actually discovers

In “Collateral,” Julian learns more than that Matty and Olympia have been working together. According to CBS’s synopsis for the episode, he uncovers Matty’s true identity and the scale of the case against the company. The reveal and the board are described in detail in an interview with Jason Ritter, who plays Julian, published by Cinemablend on February 28, 2026.

  • Matty’s identity: Matty is Madeline Kingston, not the lawyer at the Jacobson Moore firm she presents as.
  • The evidence board: Julian sees how much material the pair has assembled tying people and evidence to the Wellbrexa cover-up.
  • The response: CBS’s synopsis says Olympia and Matty each prepare “collateral” to help Julian regain his trust after his discovery.

What it means for Matty

Matty’s main protection was that Julian did not know who she was. That protection is gone. CBS describes her as a lawyer with a hidden agenda, working for Olympia, and the reveal means the hidden agenda is now known to the one person it was meant to keep out of the loop. Her next moves have to take into account a man who can use the information against her, not just a suspicious bystander.

The episode also shifts the balance between the three characters. Matty and Olympia no longer control the story alone, because Julian holds knowledge that can help or hurt their plan. The sources treat this as a change in stakes rather than a settled outcome.

Why Julian is both an asset and a risk

Julian could become useful to Matty and Olympia if he chooses to work with them. He could also become a complication if he decides to protect himself first. Ritter addressed both possibilities in the Cinemablend interview.

On the board, Ritter said:

“First of all, he knows that it’s not just the study. When he sees that conspiracy board at the end, he sees exactly how much evidence they have on this entire thing, and I think that’s a confronting moment for him.”

On what Julian now knows about the two of them, Ritter said:

“At least now he knows what he’s up against with seeing all the boards. He knows exactly who Matty is. He knows what the nature of Matty and Olympia’s relationship is, and now it’s a game of trying to make sure that the two of them aren’t teaming up again and lying behind his back.”

On Julian’s self-interest, Ritter said he is “trying to make sure that they are all on the same page” but also wants “to figure out some way to get out of it,” and that “Julian will do anything, initially, to stay out of prison, for example, as one outcome.”

Those are Ritter’s interpretations of his character, not confirmed plot developments. They do show why the reveal matters: Julian’s cooperation cannot be assumed, and his immediate motive is self-protection.

Where the season stands

Dates matter for this reveal. CBS lists “Collateral” as Season 2, Episode 9, dated February 26, 2026. Its episode guide continues beyond that point, with later Season 2 installments including “Matty Matlock,” Episode 16, dated April 23, 2026. “Collateral” is therefore the episode where Julian learns the truth, not the most recent episode of the season.
