Jordan Belfort’s reaction to The Wolf of Wall Street was mixed: he praised Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance, but called the attention surrounding the film “bittersweet,” objected to parts of its portrayal, and said viewers should take it as a cautionary tale. His comments were his account of the film and his past—not an independent resolution of disputes about what happened at Stratton Oakmont.
What Belfort thought of DiCaprio’s performance
Belfort praised DiCaprio’s preparation and the energy he brought to the role. In an Entertainment Tonight report published January 21, 2014, he said: “His mannerisms and the energy he was able to create is my sort of energy.” He added, “He worked really hard.”

Entertainment Tonight reported that the two spent months working together. A January 20 report said DiCaprio texted Belfort with questions and reviewed the script with him line by line. Belfort’s praise was about the performance and its resemblance to his mannerisms; it did not mean he considered the screen character an exact depiction of himself.
Why he called the film’s attention “bittersweet”
Entertainment Tonight reported that Belfort described DiCaprio’s Oscar nomination and the film’s attention as “bittersweet.” He said he wished DiCaprio had portrayed him as if he “was Jonas Salk and had done wonderful things,” then acknowledged that some of the conduct represented in the story was real and not something he was proud of.

That distinction matters: Belfort said he was proud of turning his life around, but not proud of the real actions associated with the story. He also said that the film’s character was not identical to him and that some details had been fictionalized.
He wanted viewers to see a cautionary tale
In a January 22, 2014 account of Belfort’s appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Live, The Guardian quoted him saying: “For me, it’s important that the movie is viewed the right way, certainly as a cautionary tale.” He contrasted it with Wall Street, saying, “In this movie, it’s pretty clear that I lost everything.”

For Belfort, the story’s ending and his downfall were central to how audiences should interpret the film—not simply as a celebration of excess. That is his stated reading of the movie’s message.

Belfort also challenged what he saw as the film’s implication about people who lost money through Stratton Oakmont. Entertainment Tonight quoted him saying, “We were calling wealthy people,” and arguing that losing people’s life savings “wasn’t the model.” He nevertheless acknowledged that some people lost money and said that was bad.
These remarks are Belfort’s defense of the firm’s conduct, not independently established findings. The Guardian’s account also noted critics’ concerns about the film’s depiction of events and victims. His objection should therefore be read as his perspective on the portrayal, rather than as proof that losses did or did not occur in the way the film suggests.
